Launch countdown
moves toward liftoff
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla.
With their second-chance
countdown moving easily to a
Thursday launch target, astron
auts Joe Engle and Richard
Truly arrived Tuesday and said,
firmly and hopefully, "this is the
real thing "
Countdown began at 8 a m
Tuesday, and on launch pad

Crews powered up Columbia's
electrical system fuel cells and
prepared to roll back the main
servicing structure
The undercurrent to the rosy
progress and optimistic fore
cast was the knowledge that
everything was glass-smooth,

Technicians found dirty oil
and clogged filters in two of
Columbia's hydraulic units and
made weekend repairs to ready

Helium balloon
heads for Oregon
PORTLAND
The Double Eagle V ballon
and its crew of four drifted
across the northern Pacific
Tuesday and appeared headed
for the Oregon coast, a spokes
man said
"If things continue the way
they are going, it should cross
the Oregon coast near Astoria
about 2 am Thursday,"
spokesman Glenn Simoes said
in a telephone interview from
Miami.
Since balloons cannot be
steered, but go wherever the
winds take them, it is impossible
to predict where they will end
up
The craft took off from the
central-Japan city of Naga
shima early Tuesday, Japan
time It is piloted by Ben Abruz
zo and Larry Newman, both of
Albuquerque, N M, and who
were aboard the Double Eagle II
that made the first-ever trans
Atlantic crossing by a balloon in
1978
The other crew members are
Ron Clark of Albuquerque and
"Rocky" Aoki of Miami Aoki, a
Japanese citizen, is owner of
the Benihana restaurant chain
and is financing the $250,000
venture

Israel kept silent Tuesday on
the reported encounter
between its planes and Saudi jet
fighters over Saudi Arabia But
the Israeli news media gave
prominence to Defense Minister
Ariel Sharon s declaration that
he views Saudi Arabia as "a
hostile confrontation state."
The military command was
still refusing to confirm or deny
the report of the encounter
nearly 24 hours after the Saudi
news agency announcement

At a news conference four
hours after the incident was said
to have occurred — but before it
was reported — Sharon said Is
rael had decided "to treat Saudi
Arabia the way we treat any
hostile confrontation state "

program, relinquished the top
spot the two previous weeks to
the World Series on ABC The
hit CBS series now has been
first in the ratings three times in
the five weeks of the 1981-82
season
But ABC was No. 1 in the
competition for the week ending
Nov. 8, figures from the A C
Nielsen Co showed, with nine
of the 20 highest-rated pro
grams, including "Grease" in
second place and "Three's
Company" fifth
ABC's rating for the period in
prime-time was 19 2 to 18.4 for
CBS and 16 1 for NBC
