Rosa Gutierrez, and Claudette Groenendaal, the ' cream of the crop" from last year's group of Oregon high school runners just might want to argue that point Hayes. Gutierrez, and Groenendaal Remember those names because the trio who amongst them have captured 16 individual state running titles, have followed Warren's and Forbes footsteps and become Ducks And they're wasting no time in making their mark on the collegiate scene Cream of the prep crop now running for Oregon "They've really stepped in to help us at an important time." says Oregon coach Tom Heinonen whose team is currently ranked fifth in the nation "Several of our returning runners haven’t been able to contribute this season due to injuries, and they've stepped in at the perfect time to keep us a national power Hayes has been the Ducks' number two runner in all four meets this season, behind Leann Warren, while Gutierrez is fourth after Eryn Forbes and Groenendaal, sixth behind Lisa (O'Dea) Martin A look at the three freshmen s racing strategies indicates the Ducks distance corps should be set for the next four years Claudette Groenedaal, a state 1,500 meters champion in 1979 and runner-up three other years at North Salem, is the fastest of the three newcomers says Heinonen. “She's got the best footspeed," observes Heinonen of Groendedaal who will concentrate on tnc 800 (2:12 1) and 1,500 meters (4:24 56), next spring in track “She's a fine cross country runner whose strongest part of a race is her fast start " "I have to go out hard,” explains Groenendaal who chose Oregon over Stanford "Because if I fall back very much early, it becomes a very hard race to run I also tend to lose my concentration in the middle of a race if I'm not around the lead pack. Rosa Gutierrez, who won 10 state titles at Glendale High School, can run any kind of strategy in a race, usually going out strong and finishing strong, says Heinonen.
