Athletic aid hardly gravy

The athletic scholarship might look
glamorous to the person who thinks that every
athlete gets a car and a job making big bucks
erasing chalkboards
But while they're better off than a student
struggling to pay for tuition, the life of an
athlete on a full ride isn't as easy as it seems
“I laugh when I read stories about the
glamour of scholarships,'1 remarked Barbara
Nicholls, counselor for student-athletes, "A
scholarship is hardly gravy If a football player
living in Springfield because it's cheaper has
his car break down, he can't borrow money to
get it fixed because of the regulations that
come with the scholarship
"Athletes on full ride scholarships can’t
hold jobs except during the summer, and any
pocket money must come from family
members only.” Nicholls concluded

athlete chooses to live

Inn receives $3826
compared to $6502 for
an out-of-state athlete
If they re living in
the dorms an in-state
athlete receives $3244
in aid while an out of

state athlete receives $5920 it living oft
campus, in state athletes receive $3533 and
out of state athletes receive $6209
These figures are the dollar value for a full
NCAA ride at the University for the 1981-82
academic year The regulating of the scholar
ships that athletes receive at the University are
overseen by the Pacific 10 Conference office,
which makes the athletic departments of all the
Pac-10 schools submit forms describing their
respective scholarship activities
Just where does the money come from to
provide for these scholarships7
"The money comes from the athletic bud
get,' said Rick Bay. athletic director at the
University. And the individual coaches can
use their money anyway they want
"In the revenue sports (football,
basketball, track and volleyball) a coach could
give three full out of state scholarships or ten
partial in state scholarships
Bay also noted that the partial scholarship,
which most athletes at the University are on,
has changed
"It used to be a partial scholarship had to
cover just tuition or just books,or just room and
board Now partial scholarships can, say, take
$200 off room and board and also pay for part
of the tuition ”
Wrestling coach Ron Finley gives out
scholarships on the equivalency bases, split
ting up his $21,000 worth of scholarships 15
ways
we have two wrestlers on full rides and
everybody else on partial scholarship,” he
said ”1 can't give full rides to everybody
because I have only six scholarships to give
out (the NCAA limit for wrestling is 11) and I
wouldn't have a team if I aid."
Finley is also blessed with the fact that
Oregon is a good wrestling state and doesn't
have to look out of
state for talent Right
now all the wrestlers
are from the state of
Oregon
Another problem
that Finley mentioned
his wrestlers en
counter in trying to
make ends meet is not
being able to get work
study jobs

out too A lot of them
don't have money to go
to school It's the little
things that are doing it,
like the books "
Miles Hancock, a
wrestler for the Ducks,
is an example of an
athlete on a partial
scholarship.
"I get my tuition
paid for and I have to
work summers and
during the school year
to pay the rest saia Hancock working
during the spring is not bad but it is tough
during the season
Hancock was offered a near full ride
scholarship from Boise State, but he says the
coaching and competition of wrestling at the
university were worth the cut in aid
Without my tuition being paid for, I
wouldn't be going to school here
Fred Cofield. a sophomore guard on the
Ducks' basketball team and a full-scholarship
athlete, echoes Nicholls' opinion of the
scholarship
"It is tough to get by on the $225 a month
that I receive.'' Cofield said "I pay $165 a
month for rent, then there are utilities and other
bills, plus you have to eat Eating is easier
during training because we eat dinner at a
training table So you only have to worry about
two meals instead of three "
"Hey, you have to eat to play ”
