Computer science infant graces PLC By MARIAN GREEN OllHEmnM The new face among the faculty and staff on the bot tom floor of Prince Lucien Campbell Hall doesn't belong to a new professor or graduate teaching fellow It's the face of 6-month-old Traci Ann Hedetniemi, born April 3 to Profs Steve and Sandra Hedetniemi of the computer and information science department On Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons, Traci can be observed sleeping or quietly playing in the "port o-crib” set up in the Hedet niemi's shared office Traci looks at home in the office A pink sweater hangs on a peg next to her father s sport jacket Baby toys and rattles lie easily within her reach in the crib, and "Rag gedy Ann” pictures are taped at Traci’s eye level on the wall nearest the crib But Traci's presence is "nothing special," Sandra says “I teach and he (Steve) teaches during the day — she's in here so I can feed her in the middle of the day.” she says Will Traci continue to at tend the University when she grows up? "We've thought about saving at least enough mon ey tor her to go to college if she wants," Sandra says, noting that Traci has about 18 years to go before making that decision However, Traci already seems interested in the academic world "She's fascinated by the books on the wall She spends lots of time looking back and forth at them." Sandra says, pointing to the large computer manuals and reference books lining one office wall The father, who heads the CIS department, says Traci "occasionally attends department head meetings " Usually Traci behaves her self at the meetings, Sandra says "If she's rested, she s pretty good Most of the peo ple at the department meet ings seem used to her " Attired in a pink dress and matching booties, the blue eyed infant attracts attention from faculty and staff pass ing through the PLC ba sement offices "People stop by and ad mire her," Sandra says "Most people like tiny babies ” # l Phi. o by Erich Bo*fc*lh«Kl« Traci Hedetniemi (without the glasses) is the newest addition to the Computer Science Dept Bookstore board names new undergrad member Karla Lynn Ritter, a senior in business management, was for mally appointed to the board of the University of Oregon Book store, Inc . at a Collier House dinner meeting Thursday night Ritter was chosen because she was articulate, alert, and organized” during an interview and because the interviewing committee was seeking both a woman and an undergraduate, board member Muriel Jackson said The board also discussed a recent survey of campus clas sified employees and noted that the survey will yield important information on serving a non student segment of the Univer sity community The board may survey the faculty in the near future Members discussed policies on how to serve students better through inventory decisions, profit margin variations, com puterization, office space, decreasing "inventory shrin Continued on Page 7 Main Desk EMU Check Cashing Information The Erb Memorial Union Main Desk Store cashes checks as a service for students, faculty and staff of the University of Oregon. Students mast present a current certificate of registration and a plastic identification card with picture; faculty/staff must present their plastic identification card with picture and current validation sticker. There is a 15 cent service charge per check. Make checks payable to the Erb Memorial Union and include Eugene address and phone number (or department and extension for faculty/staff) on the check. The limit on checks is S 10.00 unless otherwise posted When writing checks, double-check your bank balance. Make sure what you think will be a “good check” doesn't turn out to be a "bad check.” Ifyour check is returned, there isascrvicc charge of S7.50. This is in addition to any service charge charged by your bank. You will also lose the privilege of cashing checks at the Erb Memorial Union for the remainder of the year (September 1-June 30). To abide by policies set forth by the banks: 1) We cannot accept counter checks, 2) There can be no alterations or changes made on checks, 3) We cannot accept personal second party checks and 4) If you do not have personalized checks additional I.D. must be presented.
