McEnroe opens Davis Cup play today United States team is heavily favored to turn back Australians PORTLAND (AP) - John McEnroe will play Mark Ed mondson in Friday's first singles match in the Davis Cup tennis semifinals between the United States and Australia. Edmondson is ranked No. 55 in the world. The second singles match Friday will feature Roscoe Tanner of the United States against McNamara. Tanner is ranked eighth in the world McNamara is rated 11th. On Sunday. McEnroe will face McNamara in the first match and Tanner will play Edmond son in the second The pairings were drawn duming an outdoor ceremony Thursday in down town Portland. Great Britain is meeting Argentina in the other semifinal in Buenos Aires Mark Edmondson and his Australian teammates say they F are very aware of their under dog status against the United States. But Edmondson said that it's not impossible for him to beat John McEnroe in Friday's first singles match of the best of-five series "He lost last week," Edmondson said, referring to McEnroe's quarterfinal defeat in last weekend's Transamerica Open "He might have an off day again."
