McChesney, Forbes pace runners By TERRY RHOADS and DOUG LEVY Fine performances by both the men's and women's cross country teams were the bright spots in an otherwise dreary day at the Garrie Franklin Classic Saturday at Lane Community College For men's coach Bill Del linger. it was a chance to see what the 1981 version of Oregon cross country could do, but for Bill McChesney it was business as usual r The senior was in fine form as he posted a 29:58.1 time over the 10,000 meter course to win this year's cross country opener Greg Erwin was the next Duck finisher, taking third place with a time of 30:11.3, but the gap between Erwin and the rest of the Oregon runners was a cause for concern for Dellinger. “In order to be a good team, our fourth, fifth and sixth place guys have to be closer to our first three.' said Dellinger Indeed, the remaining Ducks down the line were Greg Hitch cock in sixth place, walk-on Jett Emmons in eighth place and Derek Shirley in 12th It didn't help that Jim Hill, whom Del linger usually counts on tor a solid pertormance, did not run For McChesney and the rest of the Ducks, there will be an other long layoff until the next meet, the Northern Division race October 31 in Corvallis It should give Oregon plenty of time to close the gaps "We re right on schedule."
