Musicals, dramas seek trainees By TERI THOMAS OdwEmnM The University Theatre offers oppor tunities for all students to perform during the 1981-82 season — both in front of and behind the scenes Auditions for actors are open and an nounced in advance (see story on audi tion dates). Although auditions vary, according to each director s preference, monologues and/or readings from the script are usual, says theater director Grant McKernie, adding that a working knowledge of the script is advisable as minimum preparation for all auditions Additional copies of scripts are placed on reserve in the University library before audition dates and may be checked out, he says Auditions for musicals require singing and dancing, and an accompanist is provided. McKernie says Singers and dancers are equally welcome to audition, he adds Students also are used to fill vital roles in addition to acting. McKernie says Each production's director hires students as set designers, builders, painters, costume designers, stitchers, Graphic by Russell Whang lighting designers, make-up designers and technical crews Students interested in technical experience should contact the production's director before audi tions, he says In addition, “University Players,” a newly formed student organization, will oversee "Theatre 4:30," a student production committee that assists student directors, playwrights, actors and technicians who want to work on projects outside the mainstage produc tion schedule Theatre 4:30 is a testing ground for avante garde or original material and is a way for students to be creative when mainstage cannot fill their needs, McKernie says. In the past, demonstrations, original plays, final projects and guest lecturers all have been a part of Theatre 4:30, he says The first University Players meeting will be held soon after fall term begins.
