Fast recalls first atomic holocaust j_ Four-day event reminds residents of blast victims, sheds light on current hazards By HEIDI SWILLINGER Ot *M Emaraid Between 50 and 100 Eugene residents will commemorate the Hiroshima Nagasaki bombings with a tour-day fast this week, says organizer Dorothy Gran ada The purpose of the fast is to remember victims of the first nuclear holocaust. Granada says In addition, "we want to educate people about the es calating nuctear Arms race” she says, - • *-->• - Granada, a staff member of First Step, the Eugene chapter of the Non-Violent Tactics Development Project, contends that "we are daily being brought much closer to a bigger holocaust” than occurred at Hi roshima and Nagasaki Granada says organizers are hoping to motivate people to call for a nuclear arms freeze between the United States and the Soviet Union "We need a freeze before the first-strike weapons are in place," Granada says, adding that the "first-strike" MX, Trident and cruise missiles are classified as offensive rather than retaliatory weapons "They're no good as defen sive weapons They're to be used in an offensive war," According to Granada, a weapons freeze is "essential" within the next three years, because after that time "it will be extremely difficult, if not im possible. to verify if the other side is complying with the freeze,” because the cruise missiles are small enough to be "hidden anywhere — haystacks, barns, tractors or trucks. " This will be the second year Eugene has participated in the commemoration, but Granada says it has been held around the country since 1945. The international fast will be observed in France, Germany, Britain and Japan, as well as more than 150 communities in the United States, Granada says Those attempting the fast should be in good health, she says, and tasters should drink plenty of the purest water available Granada advises tasters to relieve themselves of as much stress as possible, and she sug gests taking time off from work or finding a friend to take care of children and meal responsibili ties The commemoration starts at 5:30 p m Wednesday with a common meai for tasters and supporters The fast begins on Thursday and will end Sunday with a candlelight walk to Alton Baker Park. A number of workshops, films and discussions will be held during the four-day period. Childcare will be provided for some of the activities.
