Autzen fund nears goal ByPETERSLEETH Construction on a new multi-purpose meet ing room at Autzen Stadium awaits two final hurdles - legislative approval and more than $20,000 — but building still may begin in Sep tember Between $620,000 and $640,000 already has been donated or pledged by foundations, busi nesses and individuals for the room's construc tion, says Ray Hawk, vice president for adminis tration and finance However, the total cost for the building, which would take four months to construct would be $660,000 The 6,200-square-foot structure would be constructed on a platform above the concession stand at the east end of the athletic facility The building, which would be used primarily by the football program would provide an area for football team meetings. Hawk says Because of a lack of space, team meetings in the past have taken place in hallways under the stadium, with the coach using a megaphone to talk to the team According to a planning department document, the room also would aid the Universi ty's fund-raising activities by providing an area to entertain "guests of the institution" attending football games University football coach Rich Brooks has said the project is essential if the athletic program is to remain competitive University planner David Rowe says he is counting on heavy use of the room during the off-season as a meeting space for both the University and community Because the room would be used for many purposes, it has been designed so it can be divided into smaller meeting areas Rowe says the opening day for bids on the project will be July 30 The contract should be awarded within 30 days if the bids are acceptable and the Legislature grants permission to proceed, he says The project already has been endorsed by the Joint Ways and Means Committee and a subcommittee on capital construction Final ap proval by both legislative houses is expected before adjournment Workshop to examine child abuse A two-day workshop on child abuse will be held Monday and Tuesday at the Valley River Inn The workshop is designed primarily for school officials, law enforcement personnel and other professionals who deal with child abuse situations but interested citi/ens are invited to attend Sponsored by the School of Community Service and Public Affairs, the College of Educa tion and the Lane County Child Abuse Council the workshop will cover various aspects of sexual, emotional and physical abuse Workshop fees are $69 for both days. $35 for one day and $105 for two hours of college credit National and local experts will conduct panels on behavioral and physical indications of abuse investigation of abuse and working with parents to treat and prevent abuse Other speakers will discuss Oregon statutes, the reporting process, investigation, ad vocacy and treatment For more information, call 686-3896 or 686-3801 BUY 1 GET 2 FREE (of equal value) on shirts, skirts, blouses and fHints.
