Heat, humidity spoil Duck chances
NCAA points evade Oregon
Louisiana wasn't kind to the
Ducks
Oregon's attempts to score
and to claim a few elusive na
tional titles at the NCAA track
and field championships were
thwarted as expected scorers
failed to place and expected
titles slipped away from them
Baton Rouge's high humidity
combined with the heat
knocked the Ducks out of the
races
Friday. Alberto Salazar fin
ished fourth in the 10,000
meters to a University of Texas
El Paso trio, running 28:53 5
Salazar had to be doused with
ice after the race to lower his
body temperature
Greg Erwin finished far back
in the 10,000
The one-two-three finish by
the UTEP athletes — Suleiman
Nyambui, Michael Musyoki and
Matthews Motshwarateu — in
dicated things to come UTEP
claimed its third NCAA straight
outdoor championship with 70
points, followed by Southern
Methodist with 57 and Tennes
see with 50.
Oregon ended the three days
with only 16 points, leaving
them out in a four-way tie for
11th with about a third of the
points the Ducks expected to
compile
Trouble started early for the
beleagured Ducks David Mack
failed to qualify for the finals in
the 800 meters A fast heat put
him out of contention as Mack
finished fifth in 1 47 62
Oregon's 400-meter relay
team was also knocked out of
the finals as it finished fourth in
40 86
Saturday began, and ended,
just as dismally Jim Hill, Rudy
Chapa and Mike Friton all failed
to place in their events
Off the track, though, the
Ducks did get a few points But
the points weren’t always as
many as Oregon expected
Reidar Lorentzen came
through with an excellent series
of javelin throws that was
topped by a toss of 269-5 But

Although it was Crouser's first
toss over 200 since the Ducks
faced Cal-Berkeley a month
ago, it was less than expected
Crouser threw 213-0 earlier this
season
But the toss, the last in his
series, did propel Crouser from
sixth to fourth place The discus
was won by Scott Crowell of
Iowa State with a toss of 206-3
The heat and humidity proved
to be the bane of Oregon’s dis
tance crew again Saturday
Friton was out of contention
in the steeplechase, running
10th in 8:58 71 after qualifying
in 8:35 86, far behind the leader

Dickinson, who finished in

The 5,000 was equally disap
pointing as Hill and Chapa fin
ished seventh and ninth, re
spectively Hill took the lead on
the third lap and ran 63, 66, 66

UTEP’s
Borg wins French Open
PARIS (AP) - Swedish
superstar Bjorn Borg toiled for
nearly 3'/« hours Sunday before
outlasting a tenacious Ivan
Lendl of Czechoslovakia 6-1.
4-6. 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 for a record
sixth French Open tennis title
and his fourth in a row
It was the closest the
25-year-old Borg has come to
being toppled since he first won
this prestigious clay court tour
nament in 1974
The title was disputed in long
close rallies on the slow surface
of the center court at Roland
Garros Stadium before 16,000
fans Lendl, 21, held his own in
one rally after another until Borg
finally had the last word in a rally
of 34 strokes
Borg won a first prize of
$49,000 and went into the
record books as the first to win
the French title six times
