Pope leaves hospital Classifieds ROME (AP) — Smiling and waving, Pope John Paul II left the Gemelli Policlinico Hospital to return to his Vatican apartments Wednesday, three weeks to the day after he was shot in an assassination attempt. The pope, in his traditional glistening white robes and skull cap, walked unaided to a black Mercedes limousine for the 15-minute ride to the Vatican. The Vatican announced the pope’s discharge shortly before the pontiff’s departure at 7 p.m. (1 p.m. EDT). The 61-year-old Polish-born pope has made rapid progress since he underwent more than five hours of emergency surgery for gunshot wounds in the inte stines suffered in a May 13 attempt on his life at St. Peter’s Square. Italian authorities have charged 23-year-old convicted Turkish terrorist Mehmet Ali Agca with shooting the pope. Agca is also charged with shooting two American women wounded in the attack, Ann Odre, 58, of Buffalo, N.Y., who is to leave the hospital and return to the United States this weekend, and Rose Hall, a 21-year-old missionary who has returned to her home in West Germany where she lives with her husband. The doctors on Monday gave John Paul permission to leave his hospital bed and walk around his 11th floor suite whenever he wanted. Projects Continued from Page 3 side effects, Menaker says. Echo-location research on bats and color visfon studies on monkeys also are conducted at the colony. The urban farm, located behind B.J Kelly’s, features an inter-disciplinary program of studies by the landscape architecture department. Students, faculty and commun ity residents learn to practice careful land use and produce large portions of their own food, says Richard Britz, coordinator of the one-and-a-half acre farm. Biologist Russel Fernald, who researches the visual processes of the African ciclid fish, hopes to gather information that will aid in developing devices allow ing blind and poor-sighted people to see images. The fish, housed in 40 tanks ranging from 20 to 30 gallons, are studied to discover how the eye sees, what brain functions are involved in the visual process and how patterns are recognized, Fernald says. “We're recognized as a model system for visual research,” he says. sm CINEMA 7 10th & Olive-Atrium Building 687-0733 EUGENE PREMIERE-ENDS TUESDAY Isabelle Huppert-Gerard Depardieu LOULOU French director Maurice Pialat turns secual sterotypes on their heads in his sensational story of married upper class Nelly (Huppert) sho dumps former life and husband tor leather jacketed stud LouLou, (Depardieu), shutting themselves up in rented rooms and going at it with bed crunching gusto.
