Ivan Niven, long active in campus governance and well known for his teaching and research about the fundemental properties of numbers is the 1981 recipient of the Charles Johnson Memorial Award. Niven, who currently chairs the Faculty Advisory Council, will receive the honor June 14 at Hayward Field during the University’s 104th spring commencement. A member of the University faculty since 1947, Niven holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of British Columbia and a doc torate from the University of Chicago. Before coming to the University, Niven was on the faculties of the University of Il linois and Purdue University. Postlethwait, 36, currently is conducting a five-year program to train doctoral students in genetics, funded by the U S. Public Health Service. According to the selection committee, Postlethwait teaches with enthusiasm and a sense of excitement, and helps personalize education. He has been known, for example, to take pictures of all his students in order to memorize their names and faces. Stevenson is a specialist in Victorian literature, English fic tion from the 16th to the 20th centuries and the role of the heroine in English fiction. Stevenson wrote a book on the role of the heroine in the work of 19th century English novelist George Meredith in 1973-74 when he held a Younger Humanist Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Looking at irrigation development in the Northwest, Jones will raise questions about small farm closures, the growth of agribusiness, and the increas ing cost of electricity.
