And yet the year has gone by so quickly. All that’s left now are three issues and a million memories. Remember, Mom, when I called you from a telephone booth in Seattle after nursing my VW up there for the football game? I slept in the car, parked in a campus parking lot because I wanted to be within walking distance of the stadium in case the car wouldn't start again. It was worth it, though. Hell, the whole year has been worth it. Putting out a sports page every day and a supplement every week and attending school was sometimes a royal pain in the you-know-where. But every headache was matched by the fun of getting the story. For instance, there was the USC football game, which end ed in a 7-7 tie. I went into the Trojan locker room to get a few quotes. It was like walking through a forest of shaved gor illas. For some reason, I had second thoughts about direct ing a negative question to someone who could break my neck between his thumb and forefinger. Later in the season, I went to Corvallis for the Civil War game. I got stuck sitting next to Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Miller. The latter cheerleaded through the entire contest. As you would say, Kelli, it was a total bummer. Basketball was much more fun than football for one reason — Jim Haney. The man is personable, precise and a real crack-up when things are going well. Too bad things didn't go too well too often. For instance, there was that loss to Stanford when Oregon came within two fouls of having only four availa ble players. After the game, Haney talks with his team, then goes to the track locker room to meet with the press. He sat on a bench, looking down and rubbing the back of his neck. Someone asked the inevitable question, “What would happen if only four CONGRATULATE A GRADUATE! Haney knew the answer, but just mut tered, "I don’t know, I don’t know.” Basketball was OK, but it was hog heaven time when track started. I must have driven Dawn crazy blathering about how excited I was before the year’s first dual meet. Track offered its share of light moments. At the Northwest championships, hurdler Kris Costello walloped the second barrier in the 100 race and dropped out. Later in the day, I was taking pictures at the finish line when she walked by. I must have given her a pitiful, consoling look, because she reached out, grabbed my cheeks and pulled my face into a grin “C'mon, smile!,” she said. That’s what makes this job so fun, Dad. Athletes aren’t athletes, they’re people. People such as football’s Choo Choo Young, basketball's "Fast Fred die” Cofield and track’s Karen McDonald make it all worthwhile. They have charisma and enthusiasm, in addition to their physical abilities. • That’s what it’s all about — people. And there sure have been a lot of them imprisoned on my notepad over the past year. Maybe I’m getting a little sen timental. But then maybe I have a right to be. Take care, everybody. See you in a week or so.
