Hot time on the Farm
“Hot” would be the best all-en
compassing word for last Friday and
Saturday’s Pac-10 championships.
First, the team competition was
enough to warm the hearts of the
15,000 fans who attended the meet.
People bantered back and forth with
their personal form charts, which
ranged from the Ducks winning by
15 to losing by 20.
Hot also described the air sur
rounding Stanford’s football/track
stadium, as temperatures climbed
into the high 70s. Thankfully, the
weather hadn’t been that great late
ly. Some recent rains washed away
most of the smog, and the moun
tains encasing the Santa Clara Val
ley stood out clear as a bell.
Only 10,000 fans showed up
Saturday, which only filled half of
one side of the stadium. It was like
being in a giant metal cavern. Every
time the starter fired his gun, the
report rattled off the empty seats.
There were a lot of Oregon fans
there, and they stood out from the
crowd. Their milky skin reflected
more light than their southern coun
terparts.
The Oregon fans also stood out
vocally. Any mention of a Duck
competitor brought the loudest

cheer from the stands. There was
hardly a peep from the host Stanford
partisans or their neighbors from
Berkeley.
During the 5,000- and
10.000-meter races, the Duck fans
tried to start some rhythmic clapping
ala Hayward Field. But the sprint
happy Californians weren’t up to it.
Instead there were moans of,
"Christ, how many laps does this
race have, anyway?”
One of the crowd's biggest heroes
was Dave Porath, the Cal-Berkeley
weightman who won the shot and
discus and was named Athlete of the
Meet. Another crowd favorite was
the guy who finally unlocked the
door to the bathrooms Friday.
