"I just really ran a dumb
race,” said Chapa of the 1,500
as he rested after the 5,000 later
in the day. "You'd think by now
that I’d be able to run with a
group of people, but I ran it like
it was my first race ever.
"I thought I was in danger of
being disqualified (for pushing
through the pack), but I tried not
to push them too hard."
Chapa blamed part of his
performance on the past sea
son, in which he has been on
and off the track with various
ailments. Confidence suffers,
he said, when you don’t get
several races under your belt.
While Chapa pondered Raby
was effervescent. "My strategy
was to sit and wait unless the
pace wasn’t fast enough. This is
a big team victory because this
meet has been pegged as a
match between the Oregon dis
tances and the Arizona State
sprinters.”
This time, with Raby’s help,
speed prevailed.
