Senate confirms Crowell as forest chief WASHINGTON (AP) - The Senate easily confirmed John Crowell Jr. to oversee the na tion's forest system, the majority apparently giving little credence to allegations he was involved in a timber antitrust case. The 72-25 vote Wednesday ended weeks of controversy over whether Crowell played an active role in alleged antitrust activities while general counsel to one of the nation's leading’ timber producers. ‘‘The evidence does not sup port these claims,'' Sen. Jesse Helms, R-N.C., said of the case ..1.. for antitrust involvement laid out earlier by Crowell’s critics, led by Sen. Edward Kennedy, D Mass. "Sen. Kennedy had no facts,” Helms charged. "All he had was a chart, and he wove a tapestry of innuendo and I think that’s unworthy of a senator.” The debate centered on a recent federal court finding that Ketchikan Pulp Co. conspired to fix prices and control timber sales in Alaska's Tongass Na tional Forest. Ketchikan is a subsidiary of Louisiana Pacific Corp., the Portland-based firm Crowell was working for as niiiiiniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiHiiiii»iiiiiiiiiiHiiia iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii U. of O. students from Medford, Roseburg, Bend, Pendleton, and Newport: | join in the legislative lobbying effort for higher education. Louisiana Pacific is the na tion’s second leading timber producer and the largest buyer of publicly-owned timber. "In at least seven instances, it appears that Mr. Crowell was implicated in the violations,” Kennedy charged. "It is clear that Mr. Crowell was aware of and involved in collusive com munications by the defendents in the case; one memo even indicates that Mr. Crowell was personally directing the activi ties of an employee of a separ ate defendant in the case. “That evidence stands unre futed, ” Kennedy continued. “When I challenged the proponents of Mr. Crowell all I heard was silence. They have yet to explain away these memoranda.” in tne wane or tne reaerai court decision in the civil anti trust case, the Forest Service has suspended all timber sales in Tongass pending a full in vestigation. It could take puni tive action against Ketchikan. Crowell, who has denied any involvement in the antitrust ac tions, has already said he will take no part in government decisions involving Louisiana Pacific or its subsidiaries. .—— I Classifieds ■ LIP SERVICE country jazz at PIZAN’S FRIDAY, MAY 22 9-12 AM 4-22 STUDENTS ELIGIBLE FOR graduation June 14, who have not received graduation instruc tions may pick up material at 111 Susan Campbell Hall, or call ext 5555 528 5-21 SANDEL OPTICAL • Full Service Contact Lens Clinic • Hard, Flex, Soft Contacts • Regular and Designer Frames • Personalized Service • Established for Twenty Years You’ll Be Looking Good 1614 J Street Spfd 747-3098 __252: tfn NEED VITAMINS?
