opinion ken sands even editors get the blues Could you help me with a few questions I can’t find the answers to? Like, with nine months and a lot of money to seek applicants, how come the Unviersity's presidential search committee could find only a couple of deans and no women to compete against the favored Paul Olum? Wasn’t Olum a shoo-in from the start? Was the search just a formality? And how come no one from the scandal ridden athletic department has been convicted for the crimes that were documented? Are slush funds and illegal phone calls really illegal, or are the rules suspended for celebrities? Certainly Pat Horton must be wondering if the trials were just formalities. I’m wondering why people are bitching and moaning about the “losses” of the athletic department and its after-school activities, when we can't even buy books for the library. How come all the noise about silly little games, when the Legislature may cut three professional schools, seven or eight departments and 160-200 faculty members from the University alone? And some of us would like to know how the athletic department got in such sad financial shape in the first place. Hasn't Ray Hawk, vice president of administration and finance, always been ultimately responsible for the budget? How come Hawk waited so long to step in on the shenanigans? Speaking of shenanigans, what do members of the Revolutionary Communist Youth Brigade ever accomplish except to make asses of themselves? Has the RCYB gotten any campus converts? Do they ever sell any newspapers? The traveling salvation shows seem just as worthless, though they are more entertaining, aren’t they? While we’re on the subject of worthlessness, there’s some disagreement as to whether members of the Incidental Fee Committee are: (you choose) A) nincompoops; B) blithering idiots; C) mere incompetents; or D) all of the above. Along the same line, campus fraternities have been promising the end of hazing since (at least) 1909. Will they ever learn? What happened to Bayard McConnaughey’s annual tirade against the campus ROTC? Is there still an ROTC? Is there still a Bayard McConnaughey? Bayard, where are you? \/oi irs J.E.R.K. writer Re: Opinion: Even editors get the blues May 1. People Effectively Appealing for Cannabis Equality (P.E.A.C.E.) chose their name not due to the 60's but due to the dream of attaining PEACE in the MARIJUANA WAR (it is a war when armed men invades one’s home!). Another influence on our choice of name was the 14th amendment, which gives us "equality under the law” (tobacco and alcohol consumers are not felons!). Supports vets On May 12 I had the opportunity to be present in the gallery of the Oregon House of Representatives while the House debated House Joint Memorial 10. This memorial is simply a letter to the federal government asking that they provide certain limited services in regard to post tramatic stress, and diozin con tamination. Both of these issues are of grave importance to veterans who served their country in the time of its crises Many of these young Americans gave their lives, some gave their limbs, but all gave their best. HJM10 passed the House by a vote of 47 to 8. Those eight representatives who voted “nay" in effect said that they did not support the veteran who resided in their districts. Not only do they not sup port these veterans, but they will not support an action that is part of these veterans earned benefits for service to their country which they are not receiving. These eight representatives are as follows, and you will note, one or more are from your area: Rep Anderson, R Roseburg: Rep. Campbell, R-Eugene; Rep Jolin, D-Cottage Grove: Rep Kennedy, R-Klamath Falls; Rep. Ma gruder, D-Saint Helens; Rep. Meyer, R Springfield/Eugene: Rep. Trahen, R Grants Pass, Rep. Van Leewen, R Halsey. I believe that it is well past time that we who served our country stop burying our heads in the sand, and instead, stood up and make ourselves heard. We must let our elected representatives know that we are here, and that we do have a political club to swing at the ballot box, and unless they start supporting veterans legislation, we will replace them with people who will, at the next election, or start a recall now HJM10 was a basic veterans support bill, and these people seem to have decided that the veteran does not need his earned rights. T.A. Austin Portland Unwarranted image The Palestinian people are portrayed by Western media as either helpless “refugees" or violent “terrorists.” These stereotypes are perpetuated by Zionists and Israeli advocates who seek to polar ize conflict and intensify passions. Rare ly are Palestinians presented as human beings who suffered a devastating tragedy; a people who yearn for peace and tranquility. The creation of the State of Israel is seen by Palestinians and Arabs as a Zionist extension of European colon ialism. As long as the Palestinians have no homeland and justice is not served, there will be no peace in the Middle East or the world. The Palestinian question goes back to 1897 when the first Zionist Congress met. In 1917 Palestine came under Bri tish colonization, and in 1920, a Jewish Agency lead by Zionists organized a secret armed force called the Haganah In the same year, Sir Herbert Samuel, a well-known Zionist, was appointed the first High Commissioner to Palestine. Illegal immigration of Zionists was al lowed and encouraged by the British. In 1936, the British started arming the Zionists against the Arabs and later the Jewish Legion was formed as part of the British army In 1947, the UN General Assembly, influenced by the great powers and especially the United States, voted to partition Palestine into Jewish and Arab States. This plan gave more than 50 percent of the land to the Zion ists who made up only 30.5 percent of the population and owned only 6.5 percent of the land. When the British realized the Zionists were ready to takeover Palestine, they started withdrawing. As the British withdrew, they handed strategic posi tions and posts to the Haganah. In 1948, Ben Gurion proclaimed the estab lishment of the State of Israel. This led to wars in 1948, 1956, 1967 (when the PLO was formed as a major force representing Palestinians) and 1973. What the future holds for Palestine and the Middle East lies in the hands of the Israelis who must choose between land and war on the one hand or justice and peace on the other. For more information and literature, see the Palestine exhibit in the EMU lobby Friday, May 15. Abu-Zhar Ghafari Muslim student, ASSO U.S. cohorts May 15 has been recognized all over the world as a day of solidarity with the Palestinian people On that day 33 years ago, the processes of colonization of Palestine have culminated in the estab lishment of the Zionist state of Israel and the forceful exile of 1.5 million Palestin ians. Ever since its inception, Israel has been waging a war of genocide against the Palestinian people in addition to constant territorial expansion. On the international level, Israel forged unholy alliances with the most oppressive regimes in the world; apartheid South Africa, the juntas in Chile, Guatemala and El Salvador. What should be pointed out, at this point, is that the colonial (settler) project in Palestine has been maintained largely through the active political, military and economic support given by the United States to Israel. This support is given in defiance of the majority of the world’s community which condemned Israel’s racist and oppressive policies. Hence forth, far from promoting just peace and prosperity in the area, the United Sates has tried either directly or through its cohorts, such as Israel, to promote oppression and terror. The recent developments in Lebanon are just an other example. The Israeli daily bom bardment of civilian centers is done with the acquiescence if not the support of Washington. The attempt by the media to portray the (war) in Lebanon as a "missile crisis" cannot but bring to mind the infamous days of the cold war, which the United States is trying to revive. While the peoples of the world observe May 15 remembering the plight of the Palestinian people, Israel and its apologists in the United States set the day as an occasion for celebration. The reactionary Zionist-oriented Jewish Student Union on this campus organizes festivities to celebrate the birth of the terrorist-expansionist state of Israel while the F-15s roam the skies of Leban on dropping their napalms on the refugee centers.
