sports_ Ducks end it all with loss Huskies bury Oregon in doubleheader By DOUG LEVY Of the Emerald Ressurected from a pre mature embalmment last weekend, Oregon's baseball team was given an indecent burial Wednesday with a doubleheader loss to the University of Washington, 5-4, 5-1. Washington thus captured its first Northern Division title since 1959. And the Ducks put the final touch on their final season, finishing 2-14 in the division and 16-21 overall. The first game was an eight inning affair in which the Husk ies rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take a 5-4 victory. The second game was all Washington as Ken Knutson scattered seven Duck hits on the way to a 5-1 win. “I think Washington deserved to win it,” said a subdued Mel Krause, Oregon’s coach. “Coming from behind 2-0 in the last inning to win, that’s the sign of a championship team.” Huskies coach Bob MacDonald wasn’t about to disagree. "The kids did it," he said. “They just wouldn’t give up. We’ve played under pressure for the last two weeks." Indeed. The Huskies, who finished 12-6, had to win their last five games to garner the division crown. MacDonald also had some praise for the Ducks. "I don’t care what anyone says, they’ve got a good ballclub. They have some talented players, and they came out fired up — that’s what I was afraid of.” For six innings of the first game, the Ducks were a good ballclub. Dean Kegler looked practically unhittable, sur rendering just three hits, and Oregon fielded flawlessly behind him. Randy Porter’s sacrifice fly in the third inning scored Dean Hummel, and when Steve Crum belted his 14th home run of the year (tying Oregon’s season record) in the fifth, it looked as if Kegler had breathing room. But when the seventh inning rolled around, the roof caved in. The Huskies jumped on the senior ace for two hits and three IMPORTED coffee (§k tea By the Pound or by the Cup Kinko’s 764 E. 13th 344 -7894 Bean of the Month Guatemala Antiqua $4.30 lb. Three walks and a two-run pinch single by Kirk Cameron helped the Ducks tie it up 4-4 after seven. In the eighth, Warren deLisle reached first on Mike McLaran’s throwing error and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Claude Green to make it 5-4 Washington. This time the Ducks couldn’t counter. Talia (2-3) took the loss. Game two was highlighted by Knutson, who went the distance for Washington. He stretched his streak of innings pitched without allowing an earned run to 23 while running his record to 5-1. Single runs by the Huskies in the second, third, fifth, sixth and seventh innings were more than enough to hold off Oregon in the second game. One interesting moment came in the bottom of the third, when Crum flied deep to right, failing by a few feet to set himself alone at the top of the Ducks’ season home run record. So now baseball at Oregon is definitely over. Ironically, this game ended in the same fashion as Oregon's first in 1877 — with a loss.
