Law students work as ‘externs’ For the first time, University law students can apply their book learning to the real world through the law school’s new externship program. Through the program, 4th- or 5th-semester law students who receive externships will work full-time during a 16-week semester for a govern ment agency or non-profit law firm. Externs must return to school for one semester before graduation. Three students developed the initial extern ship proposal with the help of law Prof. Ed Baker. One of the students, Robin Selig, completed an experimental externship last fall with a public interest law firm in Washington, D C. Selig says the externship program will broaden the law school's curriculum and provide additional learning in areas such as health law, civil rights and children’s rights. Externs will provide the law school with national exposure that can enhance the school’s reputation and increase law school graduates’ job opportunities, according to the students’ proposal. However, some faculty members question the school’s ability to adequately supervise a long-distance program. Law Prof. Eugene Scoles says he is worried that students may miss important coursework because many law courses are offered only one term each year. The program will remain experimental for the next three years, and the committee has estab lished elaborate guidelines to monitor the ex terns. Under the guidelines, interested students must first find an agency and submit a proposal to the committee. Also, externs must develop a curriculum, identify career goals and demon strate how the agency relates to their planned career. A faculty advisor will work closely with the extern and the agency and will review monthly reports submitted by the student. The committee has approved two extern ships for next fall. One student will work for the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund, Inc., in Juneau, Alaska. The other will work for the Minnesota Civil Liberties Union. Applications for spring 1982 externships will be accepted until October. Housing heads elect Lee as 1982 president University associate housing director Donald Lee was chosen as president-elect of the North west Association of College and University Hous ing Officers at its recent meeting. Lee will serve from I982-83. ■ JODI you are the greatest little sister a guy could ever desire. The coast, dancing, and long trip home was fabulous. Love.
