sports_ Pepsi meet pours on talent By JODY MURRAY Of the Emerald In a way, the UCLA-Pepsi Invitational track meet is aptly named. If you want to win, you're gonna have to pour it on. Oregon’s Leann Warren, Lexie Miller, Grace Bakari and Rhonda Massey will grab a flight to Los Angeles for the Sunday meet, which fea tures some of the best track talent in the country. Miller, who was on the alternates list in the Pepsi 100 hurdles, was bumped into the field Tuesday. Warren will compete in a very hot mile and the four will comprise Oregon’s mile relay team for a rematch with UCLA. One of the biggest events will be the mile, which brings together most of the top finishers from last year's Olympic Trials 1,500 meters. That includes Francie Larrieu, Jan Merrill and Warren, who finished third. Warren set the school record of 4:15.16 in that race and nearly broke it April 25 with a 4:15.24 against Cal-Berkeley. “We know Leann can solo 4:15 in what was basically a time trial," says Oregon coach Tom Heinonen, “so we know she can run faster when she has someone to compete against.” Heinonen says Warren has exceeded her expectations for this season and is more than ready for the Pepsi run. He also is sure that the competition will be fierce. “People like Larrieu and Merrill don’t run unless they’re ready,” he says. At Wednesday’s practice, Warren said the butterflies are already starting to stir. “I’m ready, and I’m really excited. I’ve been excited about this for weeks.” Warren is aware that the element of surprise she had at the Trials will be gone at the Pepsi meet. But she hopes her kick will be enough to overcome any challenges. “How fast we've gone the first two laps will tell me when I should start my kick, if I still have Photo by Steve Dykes Leann Warren will test her finishing kick in the Pepsi Invitational mile Sunday. one," she says. "If I’m confident, I could start kicking early and go for a real good time." In the 100 hurdles, Miller will be in the strongest field she's ever faced with Benita Fitzgerald, American record holder Deby La Plante and 1980 AIAW champion Stephanie Hightower. "Based on her 13.67 time (set April 18 against Washington State), she clearly de serves to run against the big names in the field," Heinonen says. Golfers finish last at tourney Oregon's women's golf team finished last in the 72-hole Gearhart Invitational. The Ducks had a five-golfer total of 1,466 strokes. Brigham Young was the champion with 1,267. Oregon’s Sue Schoedel fired a final-round 87 to lead the Ducks with 345. BYU's Chris Lehman was in the individual medalist with 310. Softball squad falls to Pacific Oregon pitcher Marci Sowa walked Pacific University's Deanna Fitzgerald with the bases loaded in the seventh in ning to give Pacific a 4-3 victory in Forest Grove. The Ducks, 9-15, will host Portland State April 15.
