The survey was conducted by John Massengale, a member of the physical education faculty at Eastern Washington University. 590 members of the National Association for Physical Educa tion in Higher Education re sponded to the survey. Results were released March 27. The doctoral ranking in dicates stature of senior department faculty and caliber of research being conducted, physical education department head Michael Ellis says. ‘‘Our senior faculty members are known for the important re search they are doing in biomechanics, sports medicine, applied psychology, and learn ing and control of human movement,” Ellis says. The physical education department is the oldest profes sional school of physical education in the country, Ellis says.
