sports_ Reunion marks Ducks, Beaver meet By JOHN HEALY Of the Emerald It will be a reunion of sorts Saturday for Bill Dellinger and Frank Morris. Morris, in his third year as head coach of the Oregon State men's track and field program, was an assistant at Oregon under Dellinger from 1974 to 1979. Recognized as one of the country’s top weight event coaches, Morris moved up to Oregon State in 1979 when the Beaver’s head coaching posi tion opened. But the frequent successes that Morris enjoyed as a coach at Oregon have been few at Oregon State The Ducks pounded the Beavers by hefty margins in Morris' first two years at Oregon State Oregon won 126-37 in Morris’ first year and 106-57 last year. “I'm sure they will be im proved this year," says Del linger. One of the few areas in which Oregon State will be favored is the 400 meters, where the Beavers have Kasheef Hassan, the number two ranked 400 runner in the world in 1979 and a former World Cup champion Hassan, from Sudan, has been slow to round into form this year. He has run 46.8 this year but has a lifetime best of 45.18. Oregon will counter with so phomore Parrish Nixon, who has a best this year of 46.98 but only ran 47.50 in the Duck’s 97-56 win over Kansas last weekend. Perhaps the best matchup of the day will be in the javelin, where Oregon’s Reidar Lorent zen faces Oregon State’s Rich Wolf. Lorentzen, troubled by back problems earlier this spring, ap pears to have regained much of his power. He won the javelin against Kansas with a toss of 260-11, his second best throw this year, but has a lifetime best STORIES They're back by popular demand ... STORIES. The semi-final games will start at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, followed by the championship game at 5 p.m. The invitational is co-spon sored by the SOSRA and Bud weiser. vaulters who have career bests of over 16 feet, but the vaulter with the top mark - Oregon’s Jon Switzer - won't compete. Switzer has a lifetime best of 17-9, but has missed the Duck’s last three meets because of an injured hamstring. Beyond those events, it will be a matter of how many points Oregon can score. Dellinger has done quite a bit of shifting, moving his athletes into events in which they don't normally compete. Two of the Duck’s best in dividual athletes, Don Ward and Lamar Hurd, will move out of their specialties this weekend. Ward, who missed last week’s meet against Kansas, will shift from the 400 intermediate hur dles to the open 400, while Hurd, who has the second-best triple jump mark in school his tory, will be limited to the long jump. Sprinter Larry Bradley will sit out the 200, concentrating on the 100 and the two relays, while Nixon will double back from the 400 to run his first 200 of the year. Dean Crouser, who has won the discus in the Duck’s last five meets, will see if he can get any closer to his goal this year of surpassing the NCAA record. Crouser broke Mac Wilkins’ 1973 school record of 212-6 in the discus with a toss of 213-0 last week. He needs a mark of 214-7 to break Borys Chambul’s record, set in 1976. For Oregon fans who travel to Corvallis, Crouser’s tosses in the discus could provide most of the meet’s highlights. But then, an NCAA record isn’t exactly boring. Lacrosse team faces tough foe here Saturday Lacrosse enthusiasts will have a chance to watch Oregon's club sport lacrosse team in action Saturday as the Ducks square off against Mt. Rainer. ’’Mt. Rainer is a strong team,” says club sport lacrosse coach Bob Bristol. "But if we play with the same intensity that we did in Portland, I think we can beat them.” The game is scheduled to begin at noon on the intramural field, located between Hayward Field and the covered tennis courts. by SAM SHEPARD UNIVERSITY THEATRE presents Buried «Wld Robinson Theatre 8PM April 24,25.29,30 May 1,2 TICKETS- $4.50, $2.75 UO students & seniors $3.50 other students 686-4191
