Women spikers meet ‘equal’ Beavers By JODY MURRAY Of the Emerald Oregon and Oregon State’s women’s track teams each own sparkling dual meet records. The Ducks are 3-1, the Beavers 4-1. Any other attempt to equate them ends right there. The Beavers have humbled such lackluster squads as Boise State (100-36) and Idaho State (87-49) and are coming off last Saturday’s 77-50 win over Stanford in Palo Alto. But the Beavers lost 69-58 to a Washington team that was defeated by Oregon, 74-53. ‘‘Oregon is tough,” says Will Stephens, whose OSU squad meets the Ducks Saturday in Corvallis. It is the season dual meet finale for each team. “I think the Ducks will beat us by just about as much as they want to,” Stephens says. "They have tremendous strength. They’re an awful strong dual meet team.” So, as has been the case all season with the exception of the UCLA meet, the focus will be on individual events. And Oregon coach Tom Heinonen thinks there will be a couple worth watching. "The javelin and long jump will be terrific," he says. "Those two will be the most competitive events." Oregon's Sally Harmon, who popped a season-best 165-11 in the javelin last Saturday against Cal-Berkeley, will face OSU's Teri Cooper, who has a season best of 172-10. Cooper, how ever, threw only 152-10 against the Cardinals. Third place in that event should also be close with OSU's Michelle Cleland (153-2, 144-10 last Saturday) and Oregon’s Simone Frandsen (143-11, 140-11 last Saturday). The long jump, Heinonen says, "will be good because Lexie (Miller) and (Colleen) Gibson have gone after each other in the past and are ren ewing an old rivalry.” Miller set an Oregon record in the long jump last Saturday with a 19-9V2 leap. Gibson went 19- 5’/2 against Stanford and has a personal best of 19-7'/2. “I’d like to see Lexie pop a 20- foot jump," Heinonen says. "I'd like to see them both do it.” If such a thing happens, both athletes will surpass the qualifying mark of 19-11% for the AIAW nationals. The Beavers' strongest event is the high jump with Cindy Greiner (5-11), Sonya Crowther (5-8’/2) and Tammy Collman (5-7). Oregon’s Jeanne Bor chardt (5-7) or Kari Easton (5-7) have a chance to sneak in for third. Heinonen would also like some quick times in the sprints — something that has been lacking with the Ducks this sea pMei Lin’s • Best Chinese Food • Authentic Atmosphere • Friendly Service • Oriental Music Open 5:00-9:30 Mon-Sat Upstairs of the Bamboo Pavilion 1275 Alder St. V BIG SCREEN SPORTS deFrisco’s has it for you. Batiste (12.03/24.80) and teammate Lena Fritzson (1 2.14w/24.73) will get a stiff test trom OSU's Asa Penning ton, who has season bests of 12.06 and 24.67. Both Oregon sprinters will have to lop off several tenths from their times to make the AIAW standards (11.84/24.14). Heinonen said the 400 relay team of Batiste, Fritzson, Grace Bakari and Kris Costello will shoot for the AIAW mark of 46.04. Their season best is 46.62.
