For Duck football, spring training means working with a slightly altered offensive attack, going through new drills and choosing a new defensive unit. Not the whole unit, just key positions that are open because of graduation. Whatever happens. As the Ducks enter their fifth year under coach Brooks the NCAA is likely to slap additional sanctions on the already pena lized Oregon football team. The sanctions, which would stem from alleged recruiting violations, are yet unknown, but “considering our cir cumstances and our coopera tion with the Pac-10 and the NCAA, it is likely that the sanctions will be light,” Brooks says. The National Collegiate Athletic Association, formed 75 years ago under pressure to renovate the violent sport of football, is concerned with keeping its member schools in compliance. But the association has shown leniency in the past — especially if the school was stiffly sanctioned by its league. A Pacific-10 Conference decision kept all the schools, including Oregon, who had broken Pac-10 rules out of post-season bowl games. Early NCAA sanctions made individual players ineligible for a set number of games. “Whatever happens, the team is prepared to take it,” says Brooks. “And play the best football around.” This year’s squad will have a lot of incentive to play up to bowl caliber. Of course, there is concern about the defensive lineup for the first play of the game, but not about its depth. "We have a lot of people that started last year that are in there now," Brooks says. "And a lot of peo ple who saw action last year are back.” Graduation has left several positions open with a number of football players waiting to step into the holes. "It'll be a pretty good battle,” Brooks says. "Any of those kids has the potential of starting.” The only immediate depth worry is at the center spot. Sen ior Mike Delegato has the posi tion wrapped up, but the back up center is still a question mark. Both Monte Olson and Randy O’Rourke could step in, Brooks says, depending on who improves the most. “Overall, we’re capable of being a good, solid ball club.” A good solid ball club that has a place to call home. Plans to build a stadium clubhouse for the football team with donations from the public are underway. The clubhouse would provide meeting rooms and additional locker space which was promised Brooks when he was hired. The clubhouse, which would sit atop the east end of Autzen stadium, is scheduled to be fin ished by Oregon’s first home game with the University of the Pacific Sept. 19. Plans include using the building as a “wining and dining” spot for alumns during and after home games. An interesting use of an in vestment.
