sports Men to squeeze by WSU The Oregon men will have their first real test of the season while the women’s squad will have a field day when the track teams tangle with Washington State Saturday in Pullman. The victor of the men’s dual depends on who you ask. Oregon coach Bill Dellinger says it will be WSU. Cougar coach John Chaplin says Oregon. The Emerald agrees with the latter, but just barely. The final score, according to the Emer ald form chart, will be 82-81. Pivotal events will be the steeplechase and 5,000 meters, where Oregon’s Mike Friton and Alberto Salazar will challenge Henry Rono, who holds the world record in both events. However, the Kenyan saw limited action last year and is just now getting into shape. His season bests in the steeplechase and 5,000 are both almost one minute slower than his bests, which he ran in 1978. The Oregon women, after a grueling 70-57 loss to UCLA, will breeze by the Cougars, 100-27. The score is consistent with the two other Oregon/WSU encounters (104-23 in 1977, 105-17 in 1978). Oregon’s Leann Warren, Melanie Batiste, Eryn Forbes and Grace Bakari will not compete at WSU. Warren will attend the Kansas Relays to join an 800 field that includes American record holder Madeline Manning Mims.
