Ducks squeak by PSU, 6-5, score winning run in seventh Two seventh-inning singles were enough to put tne Ducks over the edge Tuesday as the Oregon baseball team defeated Portland State, 6-5. Oregon also established a record for doubles in a game as six players managed seven doubles against the Viking squad. The old one-game dou bles record was five. But the visiting Ducks fell behind early as the Vikings managed a three-run second inning to take a 3-1 lead. After a scoreless third inning, the Ducks opened things up, using the top of the fourth for their own three-run streak. With one out, Eric Martinez set up the first run with a single. James Nutt, then hit the first of two doubles to score Martinez. A Randy Porter double brought Nutt across the plate and a double by Kirk Cameron scored Porter. Oregon ended the inning with three RBI doubles and three runs for a 4-3 lead. PSU refused to accept any Duck lead and tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. A fifth inning run again put Oregon on top, but Portland State tied it up again in the bottom of the sixth. It wasn’t until the seventh in ning that the Ducks were able to put the game away. Nutt, who was three for five at the plate, punched a single and then stole second. A single to right field by Mike McLaran drove Nutt over the remaining bases, giving the Ducks their winning run. PSU got a man on base in each of the remaining innings, but was unable to convert it to a run. Left fielder Steve Crum, who leads the team with a .422 bat ting average, was three for four for the game. Pitcher Mike Talia was credit ed with the Duck win as he im proved to 2-1, and Dan King was credited with the save. Both players pitched two innings. Oregon will face Oregon State Friday in Corvallis. The two teams will be at Howe Field Saturday for a double header beginning at 1 p.m. Softball squad faces Pioneers in home opener Making their first home ap pearance this season, the women’s softball team will face Lewis & Clark today. The Ducks, coming off a 9-0 shutout of Southern Oregon, have been anticipating their home game since their planned opener last Saturday against Oregon State was rained out. Oregon, now 4-5 for the sea son, is hoping to even out its record with a win over the Pion eers. The game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. at the softball field, located south of Hayward Field. Houston takes series lead with win over Spurs SAN ANTONIO, Texas (AP) - Moses Malone and Calvin Murphy, Houston’s inside and outside threats, teamed for 70 points Tuesday night to power the Rockets past San Antonio, 123-117, for a 3-2 edge in their National Basketball Association Western Conference semifinal series. Malone scored 10 of Hous ton’s last 15 points to stave off a furious San Antonio rally that cut the Rockets’ 14-point fourth-quarter lead to a point twice in the last four minutes, the last time at 110-109 with 1:57 to play. Murphy came off the bench to bomb the Spurs for 36 points, while Malone scored 34, most of them on power moves beneath the basket.
