Crum totes some heavy timber Oregon soph leads squad at plate with .422 average He isn’t flashy, is only an average fielder and below aver u age on throwing — even for a left fielder — and needs work on base running. But one thing Steve Crum can ■ do well is hit. And hit. | With 16 games played, the S Oregon sophomore is connect ing at a .422 clip. He has also belted six homers and knocked I in 16 runs. Off the field, Crum carries 1 himself the same way he carries his bat — with a lot of con 1 fidence. But he still has the humility to admit that hitting isn’t everything. “The main thing I need to do this year is to improve on defense, and especially improve my throwing,” he says. "I also need to work on baserunning. I’ve gone downhill a lot lately.” Crum’s baseball career, how ever, has been gaining altitude steadily. At Beaverton High School in Portland, Crum was a three-year letterman, batting well over .400 while gaining all metro honors for two years and all-state his senior year. He followed his high school career by hitting .306 and start ing in left field last year for the Ducks. But even with his marked im provement at the plate this sea Steve Crum prepares to at tack another pitcher. son, Crum is working hard on the rest of his game in the hopes of impressing scouts from the major leagues. “My major goal is to play professional ball. I’d like to get drafted next year, play in the minors and eventually make it to the bigs. I think I have the talent to do it.” But first there’s Oregon, where Crum feels right at home. ‘‘I’ve enjoyed it a lot,” he says. "It would be nice (for the team) to have more money, but we’ve done all right with what we have.” Money is a problem for Oregon baseball. For one thing, the lack of it restricts extensive travel. “I see all those other teams get all that traveling and sometimes I wonder. More money would be nice,” says Crum. Despite a limited budget, coach Mel Krause feels this year’s team has a good shot at the Northern Division title, and Crum agrees. “I think we have a good chance. Talent-wise, I know we’re as good as anybody else. The teams have been modified somewhat this year. The team at bat provides their own pitcher and each batter is allowed only four pitches. It is anticipated that these changes will speed up games giving more action in the field as well as make games closer to the official seven innings. Player reaction to these changes are wel come. Intramural Team Tennis is underway, matches are played on the Covered Tennis Courts each day beginning at 3:45. The schedule is posted in the RIM office. Come out to the courts and watch your favorite team in action. Co-ed Intramural Track - Its time to start getting organized for the RIM Track Meet to be held April 30, May 1 & 2. Events include: 100 yd hurdles, 440 yd run, 100 yd dash, 4 x 110 yd relay, 4 x 440 yd relay, 880 yd run, 1 mile run, 3 mile run, shot put, high Jump and long Jump. Organizations and groups may enter teams. A team includes a minimum of 4 people. Individuals may enter events on the day(s) of the event at Hayward Field. Teams must enter a roster of team members and pay $10 forfeit deposit. Details and team entry blanks available at RIM office. Entry deadline Tuesday, April, 4:30 p.m. . Scotch Doubles Bowling Tournament for men and women’s divisions is scheduled on the Outdoor Courts for Saturday, April 18. Entries are due Friday, April 17, noon. A match will consist of 2 out of 3 games (11 point games). Each division will have tournaments for novice, intermediate and advanced players. Ultimate Frisbee - Free Clinic is planned for Wednesday, April 29 at 4 p.m. on the Gerlinger Field. Plan to attend and learn to play this exciting new game. Get your team ready to play in the Ultimate Frisbee Fun Leagues which begin in May. Fun league games are scheduled between 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in May and June. Volleyball Doubles Tournaments for men’s, women’s and mixed teams are planned! Men's and Women’s Tournament dates April 20 and 22, 5:30 pm - 9:00 pm.
