Brown said Louis died at 10:05 a m. I Louis, confined to a wheelchair since heart surgery in 1977, attended the Larry Holmes-Trevor Berbick heavyweight title fight Saturday night at Caesars Palace. Called the Brown Bomber for his punch and string of knockout victories, Louis was just 23 when he won the title by knocking out 31-year-old James Braddock in the eighth round at Chicago in 1937. He had a 35-1 record, including 31 knockouts, at the time he won the heavyweight title. His 11 years and eight months as titleholder was the longest continuous reign in heavyweight title history. Louis fought 27 championship bouts, including a record 25 defenses without a loss after he took the title. The most famous part of the Louis legend was the two championship fights against Max Schmeling. Schmeling won the first bout in 1936, but Louis won the 1938 rematch. "Joe was a boxing genius," said Schmeling, 75, who lives in Hamburg, West Germany. He called Louis “the kind that only comes, at most, one time in a generation. He was the greatest opponent I ever faced in the ring.” Net squads post losses in weekend matches Christi Dorsey of the Univer sity of Washington handed Oregon’s Lindsay Bartlett her first conference loss of the year to spark the Huskies to a 9-0 victory over the Ducks Satur day.
