Oregon will face a field of 15 teams that includes four in the national top 10 - Brigham Young, Arizona, Southern California, and UCLA - at the three-day 54-hole tournament. Jim Ferguson vacated his role as golf coach after being named part of the athletic department management team when Athle tic Director John Caine re signed in March. Assistant coach Scott Tuttle is on a pro golf tour in Asia and may not return to the team this season, says Ferguson. As a result, the squad is now led by team captain Scott Krieger. Krieger welcomes the added responsibilties and says the departure of Ferguson and Tuttle has not hurt the team seriously. “They (Oregon's golfers) are good players and they all have been in big tournaments so they know how to handle themselves. I don’t think it has affected them.” Although Krieger was disap pointed with the Ducks’ show ing in the recent Pacific Invita tional, he says the team should improve at Fresno. “We had a three-round qualifier (in practice) and it was good to see how intense every one was,” Krieger says. “I don’t anticipate any problems on this trip.” In addition to losing its coaches, the team recently lost its hottest player when Dennis Dachtler quit the team. Dachtler had a team-low 222 at the Pacific meet. Spikers await different fates It’ll be the Cakewalk and Squeaker Show at Hayward Field Saturday when the Oregon track teams compete in their second coed dual meet this year. The men’s squad, which plastered the University of Washington 107-56 April 4, will face an Auburn squad that’s uncharacteristical ly devoid of sprinters but spiced with some good distance runners. According to the Emerald form chart, which will appear each Thursday beginning today, the Ducks will humble the Tigers, 109-45. Oregon will triumph in 16 of the 18 events. The Oregon women, however, face their biggest challenge of the season against UCLA — a squad Women s Track News has called "The Impossible Team.” Last year, the Bruins came to Eugene to battle for the national dual meet championship. The Ducks prevailed, 66-61. The situation is nearly identical this year, including the score. But this time the 66 points will belong to UCLA. The long jump, javelin and 3,000-meter run will be pivotal events for Oregon’s attempt at an upset. The meet begins with the women’s long jump at noon.
