Environmental, study dorms among new housing proposals An environmental residence hall for students interested in outdoor activities is one of several new options proposed for University students who live on campus. The proposals were prepared for housing director Dan Williams by a committee of housing and student services staff members and students from the Residence Hall Governance Committee. Decisions are expected soon. "We firmly believe the University can offer educational enrichment through the programs offered in the residence halls,” says Marjorie Ramey, assistant housing director and committee chairer. She said the committee proposals represent an attempt to increase the types of learning opportunities available. The proposed options include: • An environmental dorm, run in cooperation with agencies and departments such as the Out door Club, YMCA and the University envir onmental studies program. The dorm would give students access to a broad range of outdoor experiences such as hiking, skiing and sailing as well as ecological study. • A quiet dorm, combining a study envir onment with programs from the Learning Resource Center and academic aids. More than one such dorm could be offered, depending on student interest. • Mixed class dorms for men and women, including freshmen now housed in all-freshmen halls. The opportunity for older students to serve as role models for freshmen is seen as one benefit. • Coed freshmen dorms with men and women on separate floors. They would share governance and recreational activities. Similar coed dorms have been available for upperclassmen and graduate students for the last three years. All-upperclass and all-freshman dorms will continue as options, both with single sex and coed options, Ramey says. The proposed envir onmental and quiet dorms would be coed and open to all classes. “Coed living offers students a chance to live in a more natural environment, more like their homes. Evidence from around the country suggests that coed halls tend to have less vandalism and rowdiness," Ramey says, noting that coed dorms are offered at most Oregon colleges for both freshmen and upperclassmen. Excluding family housing, the University has 47 halls — wings or sections of dorms where residents share in governance, recreational and educational activities. Approximately 60 to 70 students live in each hall. Two-thirds of the students who live in dorms are freshemn, the rest upperclassmen and graduate students. wth miti wire 'uni yjmymxnumi 99c OLD TAYLORS Re-Opening Special Cheddar Cheese Omelette, HomeFries, Muffin till 11:30 Original Cornish Meat Pye All Day Slam Dunk-large Pastrie, cup of coffee Serving the U of O since 1930 We're Tayloredto serve.
