Cal wins Pac-10 swim; Oregon finishes eighth Defending NCAA champion Cal-Berkeley took the Pacific-10 Conference swimming title by winning the last event of the three-day competition. The Bears won the 400-yard freestyle relay to edge UCLA for the team title, 351-328 For UCLA to win the meet, the Bruins would have had to win the event and hope Cal finished seventh or lower. James Yuhashi tied his own school record in the vault with a 9.8, while his 9.6 was good enough to take the floor exercise. Ring specialist Alex Schwartz captured his event with a 9.7. Dan Johnson took high bar honors with a 9.65, while teammate Rauf Tello won the parallel bars with a 9.3. Moyal again topped the Ore gon all-around list, taking first with a 54.95 total. "I’m pretty pleased,” said men's coach Bill Ballester. "We're getting consistent, which is what we need to do at this point in the season." The women’s gymnastic team had a tougher time as they fin ished second in a triangular meet at BYU. The Ducks lost to BYU, but posted a win over Cal Berkely. BYU totaled 141.95 points to 136.8 for Oregon Cal finished with 132.50. Cal’s Karen Kelsall, a former star at the Oregon Academy of Artistic Gymnastics in Eugene, and BYU’s Jan Shelley finished either first or second in either event. Beaver’s Miller feels happy with NCAA pairings CORVALLIS (AP) - Oregon State Coach Ralph Miller said Sunday he’s satisfied with his team’s placement in the National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball playoffs. “They probably are as fair as they could be," he said of the pairings in the 48-team field. "There always are some problems with teams getting to play on their home courts but that is unavoidable because sites have to be set far in advance.” The Beavers, 26-1 overall after an 87-67 thrashing at the hands of Arizona State Saturday, were seeded first in the West regional. They have a first-round bye and will play Saturday against the winner of a first-round game between Kansas State and either San Francisco or Pepperdine. The games will be played at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles. San Francisco and Pepperdine meet in a West Coast Athletic Conference playoff game Monday night at Santa Clara. A year ago, Miller criticized the NCAA for sending number one-ranked DePaul as well as two other Pacific-10 Confer ence teams to the West regional along with the Beavers. But Miller called this year’s pairings "far better than a year ago.
