It is, like all Midnight Mafias, an hour-long one-act comedy, designed to put a jovial spark into your evening’s life. Next doesn’t really fail in this, for it does have an overall uplifting effect. But, as far as Midnight Mafia productions go, I’ve seen better. The scene is an examining room in an army induction center, the time "the near fu ture.” The dialogue begins, quite appropriately, with one Sgt. Thech (Kathy Neal) calling "Next!’’ to an as yet unseen character offstage. Presently a hapless middle-aged Marion Cheever (Brian Swingle) stumbles onstage, looking as lost as a babe in the woods. "There must be some mistake," is about as much as he can say. It's obvious there has been a computer error which has called up his name for military service, but there’s nothing Cheever can do to convince the entirely indifferent Sgt. Thech of the mistake. The resulting drama is all too predictable — nothing mediocre on the part of the acting or dir ecting (both of which are superb), but more on the part of the story itself. It was written in the late 60’s, but director Terrence McNally has attempted to adapt it to the ominous present-to near-future. Thus the play comes across not only as a scenario that once was, but also what very well might be wm&Mbw. LASER IMAGES Lecture and exhibit opening at WISTEC 8.00 p.m. (doors open at 7:00) Friday, February 27 Thursday, March 5 Next to Autzen Stadium 484-9027 It again. The prospect of another draft era is a chilling thought indeed, and the illumination of this is perhaps the best facet of Next. But in the Midnight Mafia tradition, the play has a light, energetic spirit, and so is very well worth going to see. And, in terms of our “night out on the town," an enjoyable thing to do after the previous hours of drinking and carousing. As if absorbing spirits and drama wasn’t enough for one night, we were now compelled to seek out an eating establishment to fulfill the story requirement. We had to find a place that served relatively decent food, not merely a 7-11 “junk-out orgy" (we would never do that anyway — at least, not anymore). But it was 1:30 in the morning. What decent food can be had at such a bewitching hour? Lenny’s Nosh Bar, in the Cour tyard seemed a good place to try. Now, the word “Nosh" is both a noun and a verb. It is as true to say Mickey and I went to Lenny’s to “have a Nosh” as well as “to get noshed," or “to nosh something.” Or so Mickey informed me on the way over. In any case, Lenny’s has a special Nosh that one can “nosh" late at night — the four-egg omelette. Oh, to nosh again until 3 a m In a word (or two): we ordered two Noshes, noshed them when they came to the table, and became noshed after we fin ished. Our Noshes were two omelettes, one with cheese, the other with chicken curry — both of them extremely well-crafted, and served by some of the most pleasant folks ever encountered in a Eugene restaurant. And what a lively spot at such a late hour! Outside it may have been the somber hour of 2:30, but inside Lenny’s there was as much life as if it were noon. Being "noshed”, though, is no enviable state to be in. That's a lot of food to eat at such an hour — I couldn’t roll over in bed (for fear of noshing?) afterwords. And so the Big Night was over. The cost? A scant $20 between the two of us. And, of course, the additional cost of suffering the "beached whale” syndrome upon awakening late in the afternoon, and thus miss ing out on what was, I think, a beautiful sunny day of hiking and climbing, and drinking wine on Spencer’s Butte.
