Photo by Erich Boekelheide Wheelchair students get Fishbowl access Wheelchair-confined students probably will be able to use one of the elevated portions of the EMU Fishbowl next term, says University planner David Rowe. A wheelchair lift is being added to the elevated portion of the Fishbowl near the EMU Main Lobby. Construction should be completed “in a couple of weeks or so," Rowe says. “The only thing we need to get now is an eleva+or permit from the state." The $5,000 for the project are funds left over from the Fishbowl remodeling completed during Christmas vacation, Rowe says. Like other handicapped-access facilities on campus, the lift will be key-operated. The steps next to the lift will have to be perpendicular to the lift rather than parallel as originally planned, Rowe says. "The building inspector doesn’t want any toes squished by the lift as it lowers somebody to ground level." Winter grades won’t be mailed Winter term grades will be distributed Sunday, March 22 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Gold Room in Carson Hall. The rumors, which began to circulate Sunday after the Oregonian reported that Caine was being forced out of his job, were sluffed off by Caine, the Athletic Department and the University administration Monday. “Rumors fly constantly on a person in my positon, and you never know who that source is,” said Caine. The University administration is not pressuring him to leave, he added. The Oregonian quoted an unnamed source as saying that “Caine is gone. All that’s left is the timing of the move." The source said that Ray Hawk, University vice president for administration and finance, and Ralph Sunderland, University budget director, were “making every effort to force him (Caine) to resign. “They’ve put pressure on him, and it's not as it appears. They’re just making him a scapegoat Continued from Page 1 essential to the job “If you can’t work with people, you’re dead,” Hanlin says. Versatility is also a prerequisite. "We re looking for a jack of all trades," says University housing director Dan Williams. "Some one who’ll have an abundance of good sense, self-confidence and judgement.” Those skills come in handy when dealing with the many hassles RAs encounter. One of the toughest parts of an RA's job, Hanlin says, is developing good rapport with residents without losing their respect. RAs begin training for their jobs in mid September before the residents arrive For eight to nine hours a day, they attend meetings and workshops on everything from fire safety to crisis for their own inadequacies." Hawk denied the rumors Caine also said there has been no tension between himself and the University administration that would create any question about his status at the University. "The Oregonian has provided a forum for someone to take pot shots at the University and the Athletic Department without allowing for rebuttal,” said George Beres, sports information director. Reports that the coaches and administration are working in collusion to force Caine out are untrue, said Tom Heinonen, women’s track coach and a member of the coaches’ committee Heinonen also said that the article was in accurate in reporting the coaches’ committee consisted only of coaches from sports slated for elimination. “It’s not a group of the coaches who are going to be cut but rather all 20 coaches representing all 20 sports." counseling, with time off in the evenings to socialize with the people they'll work with. Once students enter the dorms, the RAs' real work begins. They must check in some seven dozen students, arrange initial dorm meetings, direct lost students, organize refrigerator and swivel chair purchases and handle room switches and homesick freshmen. And this year all applicants must attend one of at least three informational meetings. The first meeting will be held tonight at 7 p.m. in the University Inn main lounge Two other meetings are scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday in Sheldon Hall Lounge, and for 7 p.m. Thursday in the Bean West Conference Room. Applications are available at the University Housing Office in the Walton Complex.
