Oregon, Sun Devil wrestlers duke it out at Pacific-10 meet By MiKE RIPLINGER Of the Emerald It’s a do-or-die situation for the Oregon wrestling team as they travel to Corvallis Sunday and Monday for the Pacific-10 Conference championships. Bragging rights in the conference plus berths to the NCAA national tournament will be at stake when Oregon, ranked eighth in the nation, fights it out with Arizona State to settle once and for all who is number one in the Pac-10. "ASU is slightly favored, but we're not too far behind." says Duck coach Ron Finley. "OSU will definitely be a factor and will be right up there. “We've been shooting for this for a long time and we're really going to have to perform if we’re going to win it," adds Finley. The draw, which will decide who wrestles who, will have a lot to do with who wins the tournament, says Finley. "If we get a lot of first-round matches, then we ll have the opportunity to pick up some ad vancement points. But if we get byes in the first round, and ASU gets matches, they could go ahead by as much as ten points,” said Finley. The Ducks appear to have two wrestlers sure to be seeded first in returning conference cham pion Jeff Stuebing and Ryan Kelly. Five wrestlers — Cliff Porter, Bill Nugent, Barry Boyles, Mike Miller, and Dan Cook — all should be seeded second. "We’ll have seven of our 10 wrestlers ranked first or second and that’s not too bad," said Finley. “All 10 wrestlers will have to place in the top three if we are going to win this tournament, and I think we’ve got an excellent chance to do that." The top two finishers in each weight class, plus 10 wildcard choices, will be eligible to com pete in the NCAA tournament March 12-14 "We've got to do well in this tournament if we are going to have a chance of finishing as high as we did last year in the national tournament," says Finley, whose Ducks finished 11th last year.
