Gaib and I finally finished digesting the fancy pancakes, feeling much like Tom and Huck living on the shore of the river all that time. As soon as we returned to the Emerald, however, The Boss fancied it was ",about time” we had yet another breakfast. Back we went. "This time,” I said to Gaib, “you write the story. I mean, here we are, after all, eating breakfast for free all week, and you Ve yet to write a word about it. ’’ "No problem," saith he. "I’ll be glad to do it. ” Here, then, is Gaib's story — as written by Kirk. in his eyes. But I subtly kicked him in the shin, reminding him that I didn't want to end up beached on the river's edge again. He accepted the singular cinnamon roll from the waitress, and it was quite enough for the two of us to eat and enjoy. Williams, so Gaib and I con clude, is a good place to eat. The food is reasonably good, the prices fair. And Ernest Hemingway, if he were alive today, would call it A Clean, Well-lighted Place. - Kirk Knighton Art for the taking Roger Kukes, well-known Portland animator and teacher at the Northwest Film Study Center, will present a collection of animated shorts he feels represents some of the best in dependent animation of the past decade This free showing is on March 5 at 8:30 p.m. in the EMU Ballroom. On March 6, Kukes will conduct an "Anyone Can Animate" workshop in 190 Lawrence. The workshop costs $5 and runs from 9 a m. to 12:30 p.m. Space for the workshop is limited to 20; register at the EMU Main Desk. For more information call the Cultural Forum at 686-4373. Eugene Symphony Orchestra tickets are no on sale for the second SuperPops concert. The concert will feature Mason Williams. The symphony also has a new policy: Every classical concert for the rest of the year students can get tickets 10 minutes before concert time at half price. Inexpensive culture. One last note, the Lane Regional Arts Council (LRAC) in Eugene has prepared Artist Survival Packets on grantwriting, performing arts and visual arts. The packets are on sale. Call LRAC at 485-2278 for more information. Gaib and I broke our fast on a cold and rainy Thursday morn ing by venturing into the Wil liams Food Company. Neither one of us ever having been there before, we might have ex pected to find nothing but Wil liams Bread in the offing. What we found, however, were some friendly waitresses, eager to serve us to the utmost of their capabilities. Why the smiles? Could be because I ac cidentally mentioned that Gaib and I were "from the Emerald.” Or maybe they're just real nice folks there. We’ll never know. They took our order quickly. We sat down in a booth by the front window and gulped coffee while we waited, catching glimpses of Emeraid stories between gulps. Nothing ex traordinary about that. Breakfast arrived — in perfect flying formation. The waitress arranged everything just so. My cheese omelette with hashbrowns and homemade bran muffin was flawless. Gaib could hardly get a word out as he lustily sunk his teeth into his bacon ‘n eggs — I wouldn't let him talk with his mouth full. After he was done, though, he belched and announced his breakfast a complete success. " The waitress returned, eager to learn of our verdict. “We’re sure you’ll be happy with our report,” one of us said. “In the meantime, what have you to further titillate our tastebuds?” She brought a very large homemade cinnamon roll to our table by the window. “Freshly made this morning,” she said. ‘‘How much for that monster?” Gaib demanded. “Seventy cents,” she said.
