Chosen by Mortar Board Prof of month teaches tools for research Counseling Prof. Richard Freund is, as he puts it, “.5 at the University and 5 at LCC.” “I do a lot of running back and forth,” says Freund, voted Mor tar Boards’ Professor of the Month. He has one part-time job in the Counseling Dept, of the College of Education and an other as a counselor at Lane Community College. Both jobs began this year. Freund, who spent the last four years as a visiting professor in the Psychology Dept., is "quite pleased” to receive his first teaching honor. His course, "Research Methods in Educa tion II,” concerns the use of introductory statistics to answer student questions about behavior. Statistics "provide them with tools” to answer those ques tions, he says. Many of the questions have to do with counseling methods. Freund received his training in experimental psychology. After earning his doctorate at Stanford University in 1971, he taught general psychology at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Informal counseling sessions with students, however, led to an interest in counseling and clinical psychology He came to uregon in i»/o, where he began teaching sta tistics in the Psychology Dept. Freund acknowledges a clear difference between experimen tal psychology and counseling. Experimental psychology is “more pure science,” while counseling is an ‘‘applied field aimed toward helping people make more informed choices in their lives.” Despite the shift in his career, ricunu o iwvc iwi oiauouuai theory has remained intact. Statistical theory, Freund says, is “aesthetically pleas ing.” The University funding crunch poses a special threat to research, he says.
