EPUD reigns at electricty forum By CAROLYN RAMSAY Of the Emerald One side in a battle over rural Lane County’s power system was missing from a forum spon sored by the League of Women Voters Thursday night. Pacific Power and Light didn’t send a representative to discuss this Tuesday’s Emerald Peoples Utilities District bond election. In the election, voters in rural Body identified as 17th victim ATLANTA (AP) — A medical examiner on Sunday identified skeletal remains found Friday as those of 11-year-old Jeffery Mathis, the 17th black child to be found murdered in the At lanta area in 19 months. Dr. John Feegel, associate medical examiner for Fulton County, said he identified the body primarily from dental records. All of the victims were black, and all were between the ages of 7 and 15 years old. PP&L shuns invitation to debate Lane County will decide whether to give EPUD $72.5 million to purchase PP&L’s generating and distributing facilities The two utilities have been unable to agree on a price for the system, and EPUD hopes to obtain it through condemnation if the bond passes. EPUD contends that a priva tely owned utility charges more for power than a publicly owned utility, but PP&L contests EPUD’s claim. At the forum, league member Laura Stine said PP&L declined to attend the forum because the utility felt it has already informed the public of its stand on the issue. Despite PP&L’s absence, EPUD board chairer Dick Eymann, banking consultant Sam Granberg and engineer Gale Corson argued the issue with ex-EPUD board member Cliff Everett. Everett said he represented an alternative viewpoint, not PP&L’s. EPUD representatives used charts and figures to argue that in the long run, if not initially, energy consumers would pay less for EPUD-produced elec tricity. Everett said instead of taking over PP&L, EPUD should enlist help from the Public Utilities Commission if PP&L’s electrici ty rates are too high. EPUD representatives claimed the public utility could sell power at rates 5 to 42 per cent below PP&L’s. They also claimed voters would have a say in the man agement of a public utility. Audience member Mike McLain, a PP&L lineman, rebut ted EPUD’s claim that it would hire displaced PP&L employees if the bond passes.
