Beavers’ accuracy destroys Ducks By JODY MURRAY Of the Emerald Oregon State's Steve Johnson pumped in 20 points, teammate Jeff Stoutt came off the bench to score 18, and Oregon spent all Thursday night trying to find the basket as the Beavers trounced the Ducks, 78-61. Before a capacity and sometimes thunderous McArthur Court crowd, the Beavers hit nine of their first 10 shots and finished with a school-record 72.5 field goal percentage to record their 20th season win against no losses. Oregon fell to 10-11 and 3-9 in the Pacific-10 Conference. OSU's opening burst put rthem in charge of the game, while Oregon's atrocious shooting kept them there. The Ducks shot a wincing 40.7 percent from the field, and only 32 percent in the first half. “We plaxed like a team that’s been hurt by losing two in the Bay Area,’’ said Oregon coach Jim Haney, referring to last weekend’s setbacks to Cal and Stanford. “We didn’t want to go out and give it all and give it with heart.” Informed of Oregon State’s field goal performance, Haney admitted “its tough to beat anybody that shoots 72 percent.” Johnson had his usual phemonenal night, scoring six of eight from the field and eight of 10 from the line. This was despite early foul trouble that made OSU coach Ralph Miller yank his star center with 14:14 left in the first half. Johnson sat out the rest of the half, but the Beavers didn’t seem to mind as Mark Radford zipped in all five of his shots for 10 points. Felton Sealey was high-point man in the first half for the frustrated Ducks with seven. Sealey finished the game with a team-high 12 points. But the emphasis in this game was not on any individual — the hero Thursday night was the entire Oregon State suad and its mentor, Miller. With a nationally televised game against St. Johns waiting for them Saturday, the Beavers chalked up a fat, heavy mark for their claim to the top spot on the polls. “They’re playing with a lot of con fidence,” Haney said. “They believe in what they’re doing." “That’s the number-one team, a great OSU sets school field goal mark team," said Oregon's Fred Cofield, who finished with 10 points and seven assists. "They plaxed well out there." John Greig, who overcame a tender knee to score 11 points for the Ducks, had a conditional assessment of his opponents. “I don’t know," he said, “we’ll see Saturday. But you have to give them their due — they’ve beaten us three times." Because of that unsavory distinction, Haney has one of the best viewpoints of Beavs feel near-perfect, like well-timed machine n._ lAllti ■ a mm m » vvnn ncm, i Of the Em*r*td They come about as close to perfection as any college basketball team has a.right to expect. Watching them move the ball up the court is like watching Rembrandt paint one of his masterpieces. On defense they remind you of a diamond cutter, ail precision, a finely honed cutting edge They are Oregon State, and Thursday night in McArthur Court the Beavers proved just how good they are, shelling Oregon by a 78-61 margin in a Pac-10 conference game "I think we have progressed as far as we can," said OSU coach Ralph Miller of his top-ranked, undefeated (20-0) Beavers "The only weak link we had for some time has been Jeff (Stoutt) and he’s come back out of the doldrums.' Although Stoutt scored 18 points (including eight of nine from the field) and passed out six assists, this was a team effort by the Beavers. Stoutt’s performance seemed to be just one wheel of a many-wheeled machine, each piece having its own specific role in the movement of the machine as a whole. Stop one cog and another one pops up to beat you. Stop that cog and another one seems to avpear "I’ve been saying all year," said Miller, "that I can substitute from my bench and not lose any strength." Center Steve Johnson, who hit for 20 potnis, tnciuatng six or eignt from the field and eight of 10 from the foul line, thinks that is why the Beavers could be unstoppable. But what about Ralph Sampson and the Virginia Cavaliers, the other number-one-ranked team in tme nation? “He would create problems for me because of his size, but I think we could present problems for him. He can't beat us by himself, and although he has good players around him I think we have more depth all the way down the bench,” said Johnson. “Besides, I don’t think he's ever seen any team that can pass the ball around like we do." Against the Ducks. Oregon State passed well enough to register 21 assists on 29 baskets And if that isn’t impressive, they also shot .725 from the field as a team. “People have been criticizing our play lately and tonight J think we dug down and played well,*’ explained senior guard Mark Radford, who had 13 points on the night. “We stuck with our offense and except for some calls by the officials at the end, we kept our composure." All too true, agreed Oregon coach Jim Haney. “Oregon State should be happy with the way it played before an Oregon crowd,” said Haney. “You are not going to beat anyone who shoots more than 72 percent ” the Beaver's progress. Was Thursday night the best game OSU has played against the Ducks? "That’s difficult to access,” Haney said, "They played good in Gill (Colise um in Corvallis), they were good to night...” He paused . “The cir cumstances were tougher here, they had no home crowd, so they had to be pleased with what they accomplished.” Oregon managed to hang onto the Beavers for the first three minutes of the game, but then OSU broke a 4-4 tie with 10 unanswered points, led by three Radford jumpers. Two eight-foot jumpers by Cofield pulled Oregon back to a 28-23 deficit with 2:24 left in the half. Cofield then fouled William Brew, and Haney waved his awns at his sides as Brew stepped to the line. The sporadically enthusiastic Mac Court crowd responded with a deafening racket and Brew missed one of two. But Radford popped in an 18 footer with 1:15 to go and a last-second field goal attempt by Clark was deflected The half ended with the Beavers up 31-23. “In the first half we almost played afraid," Haney said. "We were tentative with what we wanted to do." "We can't wait for the crowd to do something for us," Greig said. "Although it was nice for (seniors) Mike and Felton, and the young kids haven’t heard it a lot.” "It was a good crowd," said Cofield. "They came to see us uvset them. And we could’ve. State faithfuls, who were sometimes louder than the Duck fans, roared their approval. Oregon was left to comtemplate the night’s events and the pain of its first losing season record this year. "The ball just wasn’t dropping," Clark said. "That’s the way it went tonight. "They were were pretty much in con trol of the whole game," Clark added. "What can I say?” Not much. The Beavers said it all. Oregon - Sealey 4 4-6 12, Greig 4 3-311, Cofield 5 10. Clark 4 1-1 9, Whiting 2 5-7 9, Cheatham 2 4, Walker 2 4 Burns 1 2.
