If traveling is out of your financial scope, and summer school, out of the question, and mowing lawns or waitressing in Hometown, U.S.A., the constant prosaic bore, well, take heart. According to the 1981 Sum mer Employment Directory, there is a glimmer of hope on the dark horizon. Not only does the Summer Employment Di rectory offer interesting and diverse jobs in National Parks, summer camps, resorts and ho tels, ranches, summer stock outfits, government agencies and more, but also tells you how to go about getting them. Released annually by Writer’s Digest Books, Summer Employment Directory is a compilation of summer jobs submitted by the employers for print. The book is divided into two parts: The first discloses such information as how to write a resume and cover letter, dis cusses the interview, and reveals tips from employers on what they look for in applicants. The second part offers state by-state job listings. These job offerings display the number of personnel needed, wages, the length and dates of em ployment, and the nature of work required. Other notes include fringe benefits, college credit pos sibilities, room and board ar rangements, and where, when and with whom to apply. It’s all there. Positions range from fishing guides to camp counselors to the proverbial multi-purpose dishwasher. And, if working in cities is your thing, the Directory listsgovern ment jobs through the Depart ment of Labor in the New York City and Washington, D C. me tropolitan areas. Yet, for all of its information, direct assistance and wonderful insight, the Summer Em ployment Directory is lacking in ample quantity of jobs. If the Directory should gather a fol lowing, its quite likely that the only available placements may be in less desirous areas as Newark, New Jersey or Bettendorf, Iowa. High demand areas such as the West Indies, Alaska. Hawaii, California or Oregon and Washington have severely limited job selections. Alaska, for example, has a list of five jobs with a total of 42 open ings. But, if you're interested in finding summer work in an en joyable and stimulating envir onment, but have no idea about who knows, you may find your self riding horses in Colorado and getting paid for it. If you’d rather spend your summer in a career-oriented position, perhaps the 1981 In ternships would be an asset. Keeping in mind the little or no wages internees receive, the book supplies an informative compilation of cheap housing in preferred metropolitan areas. Internships also provides the reader with additional informa tion about where to gather sup plementary career manual sources Students in the media field will find the extensive commun ications section most beneficial: Internships are offered with newspapers, magazines, televi sion and radio stations. Other important areas include the performing arts, scientific re search, public administration, business and industry, law and a host of others. For a small investment these two paperbacks, combined with a little time and energy, can lead to invaluable job experience in that glorious pursuit of a career, or perhaps just a fun way to spend a summer and get paid.
