Wrestlers pin OSU to biggest loss, 33-8 The Oregon wrestling team hit both high and low as they trounced hapless Oregon State in McArthur Court Tuesday night. The sixth-ranked Ducks scored the most points ever against OSU in addition to holding the Beavers to the lowest total ever, as they won this Civil War battle convinc ingly to raise their season record to 14-1. Dan Cook and Bill Nugent both flattened their opponents to highlight the Duck’s cause. Cook scored his pin with 1:15 gone in the first period, while Nugent’s had to work for his, getting it at the 6:23 mark. These were the only bright spots in an evening filled with errors committed by both sides, as the Ducks won 10 of 12 matches. “It’s not like they really won it,” said losing coach Dale Thomas. “It’s more like we gave ^^^►kyligh^Refector^^ Fresh Ground French Roast Coffee Small .30 Large .50 it to them. Nobody wrestled well out there all night. Nobody.” Duck coach Ron Finley wasn't too excited either with the quality of wrestling, but coming out on top of Oregon State didn’t seem to dim his spirits much. "This was definitely a sub-par performance for us and Oregon State. But anytime you beat them them, it's got to be a lot of fun," said Finley. "We've had better matches, especially against the Beavers, but I guess we'll just have to take this and work on it,” added Finley. Finley was happy with the work of 118-pounder Randy Ohta, who in only his third match of the season beat the Beaver's Jamie Wise, 15-8. Ohta showed his inexperience by al most being pinned late in the third period, but hung on to get the win. "Ohta was superb out there,” said Finley. "He wrestled well the whole night until that little Photo by Steve Dykes Bill Nugent put the ropes on OSU's Barry Miles. Seconds later, Nugent had a pin. slip-up. I thought there it goes, it's all over' but he showed guts and got off his back.” STUDENT SAVERS Ajax Laundry Detergent .9 Pk9 $1 59 Nalley’s Pickles Genuine, Garlic, Banquet or Fresh Kosher Dills 46 oz. $t 19 Diamond Standard 2/ Foil 12” x 25" roll Quaker Oats Regular or Quick 42 oz $1 19 Nalley’s Imitation Mayonnaise 32 oz. Feb. 3. “But that is just the thing about these Civil War matches, anything can happen and it usually does.” he said. “There wasn't a wrestler out there who looked good. I wasn’t impressed with anybody out there,” said a depressed Thomas. “Physically, we weren’t really in shape to wrestle. We were missing a few people, but so were they. It just wasn’t good wresting,” he added. “We will definitely have to improve on this showing," Fin ley said. "We didn’t perform that well as we should have for OSU, but we can work on this. "Now just because we wres tled the Beavers, we can’t let down against Arizona tomorrow night. They have a tough club and we had better be ready for them.” Oregon will have to continue without 118-pounder Mike Erb, who suffered a motion fracture in the back of his neck during practice last week. "We are in trouble against Arizona because they have a nationally ranked 118 pounder and an All-American at 150 pounds,” Finley said. "These are two weights where we are weak, record wise, but hopefully we can surprise them.” The Oregon-Arizona match will start at 7:30 in McArthur Court tonight.
