NY links skin problems to radioactive rings ALBANY, N Y. (AP) - State health officials are urging peo ple with "serious skin prob lems” to seek medical help and have their gold jewelry checked for radioactivity following the discovery of three contaminat ed rings Radioactive gold jewelry has been blamed in at least two cancer cases in the past 14 years. One patient's ring finger was amputated. "We don’t want people to be terrified by this news," said state Department of Health spo keswoman Frances Tarlton. “We do want them to be aware of the possible danger and if they have real problems to get them checked." The rings apparently were made from hollow 24-carat gold "seeds,” impregnated with radioactive radon gas, which were used in cancer treatment The seeds are injected into tumors where the radiation would kill cancerous tissue Radiologists say the gas, radon-22, remains active for at least 100 years. Three radioactive gold rings owned by women from Buffalo and Hamburg were discovered last week when more than 1,200 pieces of jewelry were checked at WKBW-TV in Buffalo, ac cording to William O'Brien, as sociate radiological health specialist for the state Health Department’s Buffalo bureau of radiological control. Ten radioactive gold rings surfaced as early as 1967 in western New York, New York City and Pennsylvania, O'Brien said Doctors knew of the dis covery, but the public was never warned for fear of unwarranted Thurber to talk on Peru’s government The challenges confronting the new civilian government in Peru will be discused by the head of the University’s interna tional studies program during a noon talk Thursday Clarence Thurber, who spent three weeks in Peru in December as part of a team of consultants examining reform of the country's agricultural programs, will speak at the Erb Memorial Union Forum Room. The talk is sponsored by the Latin American Studies Com mittee. Thurber, a professor in the Wallace School of Community Service and Public Affairs, was the public administration specialist on the three-person consulting team Arturo Tanco, minister of agriculture in the Philippines, and Ralph cummings, interna tionally known agromonist from North Carolina State University, were the other consultants.
