Rabid Huskies put bite on Oregon, 102-91
Bob Fronk poured in 35
points, 23 of them in the second
half, to lead the University of
Washington to a 102-91 win
over Oregon in a Pacific-10
Conference game Thursday
night.
The Huskies’ point produc
tion marks only the fourth time
th -y have gone over 100 points
in a Pac-10 game and the first
time they've topped the century
mark against an Oregon team.
Oregon’s record drops to 1-5
in the conference and 8-7 over
all Washington is now 2-5 and
9-7, respectively.
Mike Clark led the Ducks with
a season-high 27 points. Felton

round out Oregon’s double
figure scorers.
As a team, Oregon shot 44
percent from the floor. The
Huskies shot a blazing 62 per
cent.
After holding a 40-38 lead at
halftime, Oregon pushed ahead
to lead 49-44. Washington then
took control behind Fronk’s
three field goals and, within four
minutes, led 55-57. The Huskies
never relinquished the lead.
“We went to sleep for four
minutes,” said a quiet Jim Han
ey, Oregon’s coach. "Washing
ton played 40 minutes, we
played 36, and they won.”
The Huskies stretched their
lead to 12 points with about five
minutes to go.
Oregon's last chance came
with a minute left, when Barry
Walker scored a lay up and was
fouled. He completed the three
point play to cut the Husky ad
vantage to 93-87.
But then Washington's Andra
Griffin was fouled by Clark while
attempting a slam dunk and
made one free throw. Oregon
then went cold and couldn’t
cash in any free throw attempts.
Finally, John Grieg fouled UW’s
Dan Caldwell with only 32
seconds left.
Caldwell’s two free throws
gave the Huskies a comfortable
96-87 margin.
Later, two free throws by
Fronk gave Washington it's 100
points.
“Ninety-one points is an am
ple amount to win a basketball
game,” Haney said. “We did a
miserable job at the defensive'
end, which has been our
strength all season."
The Ducks, still languishing in
the Pac-10 cellar, will travel to
Pullman for a Saturday game
against Washington State.
"We re going to get in as
many practices as we can
before then so we can put in a
good game,” Haney said.
Women roar past UW, 99-70
Oregon’s 18th-ranked
women’s basketball team
roared to an early lead over the
University of Washington
Thursday, claiming a 99-70 vic
tory over the Huskies in Seattle.
An early basket by 6-3 center
Alison Lang put the first Oregon
points on the board Four bas
kets and three minutes later the
Ducks held a 12-0 edge over
Washington, which battled from
behind but never came close to
the Ducks, who are now 4-0 in
league play and 14-5 overall
The first five baskets, by four
Oregon starters, told the story of
the game Washington couldn’t
get their hands on the ball.

And when they did they were
plagued by turnovers — 19 in
the first half and 35 in the game.
Oregon had only 23 turnovers,
10 in the first half.
Another part of the same story
was told on the scoreboard.
While the Huskies managed to
earn 12 points with 11 minutes
left in the half, 6-0 forward Bev
Smith had 13 of Oregon's 33
points. Smith accumulated a
game high 23 points, 15 in the
first half.
For the next 11 minutes the
Huskies managed to stay even
with the Ducks, scoring 16
points to Oregon’s 14, but it
wasn’t enough to drastically
narrow Oregon's 47-28 halftime
lead.
Oregon outrebounded the
Huskies 32-24 in the first half
and allowed the Husky high
scorer, 5-9 freshman guard Ka
ren Murray, only eight points of
her 21 game total.
Washington came back in the
second half to score 42 points,
but were unable to sneak
through Oregon's press
defense. Washington’s defense
also allowed the Ducks to score
52 more points in the second
half.
Washington’s also lost three
players who fouled out late in
the game.
Oregon outshot the Husky
squad 50 percent from the floor
to Washington’s 38.5 percent.
Washington outshot the Ducks
from the line, 64 percent to 57.5
percent
Oregon’s 5-11 senior forward
Debbie Adams, who is from
Tacoma, finished the game with
18 points, shooting 81.8 percent
from the floor.
