Architecture school fights studio squeeze By MARIAN GREEN Of the Emerald Too little money is a constant worry for most University programs, but in the architecture department, money worries have sent faculty and students back to the drawing board. When the Legislature lopped $2.7 mil lion off the University’s budget during a special session last summer, new build ing projects for the architecture depart ment were left in design stages. The most immediate problem is over crowding in architecture design studios. The number of students per studio has increased by 15 percent to 20 percent, says Dean Robert Harris of the architec ture and allied arts school. "The increase is significant because there are a lot of students in a class that's designed for a one-to-one kind of rela tionship,” Harris says. “Under normal circumstances, this is about a half-hour per student. "Now the amount of time professors have available to spend with each student in class is less, but we've found our professors just spend more time (out of class) with them." But the overcrowding does bother Samuels. "It makes me frustrated because I know it limits the professors themselves from making the education the way they’d want it to be." Department head Jerry Finrow believes "it's made everybody angry and intense over and above what it would be if they were teaching just an additional lecture course." But professors having less time for students is only one part of the over crowding problem, Harris says. "A lot of equipment is quite makeshift. Maybe 50 to 75 students’ drafting tables are sawhorses and plywood," he says. "The desperate aspect is that the governor’s budget doesn’t include fund ing for the building. That means we ll be in this God-awful situation for another four years." In addition, visiting lecturers in all six departments of the school have been "almost entirely eliminated, " according to Harris. "That's going to be a real loss," Samuels says. "Those were good talks." Some workshops and short courses also have been canceled, and at least one major lecture class that had an en rollment of more than 270 students has been canceled. The lecture course is a requirement for some majors in the ar chitecture and allied arts school.
