mike rust rust never sleeps It’s but a matter of hours now before Jan. 20 is here, when Reagan will be sworn in and the Living Dead will rise up and gnaw the flesh of the Progressive and Enlightened. However, the P and E haven’t been completely idle. .. • The most noticable of the local anti-Reagan activities was “The People’s Inaugural,’’ which took place this past week end. "The People” had a lot of energy and enthusiasm, but nothing really unusual hap pened. They just spoke out againsi war and capitalism and sexism and stuff. Student attendance at the march and rally seemed to be relatively light, with most of the footpower coming from Eugene’s leftistalternative com munity. The speakers seemed to be a pretty fair sampling of the 1981 version of our local Left — half the time was spent shouting about “People United,’’ bring ing down governments and similar themes while the other half was spent complaining about the cutbacks in welfare and human services. • It was pretty difficult for sensationalism-seeking scribes to find any really negative reac tion to the march from Eugene’s bourgeoisie. More typical was the reaction of man talking to woman in a downtown shop as “Dykes For Peace’’ and Ex-editor will speak A former editor of Mother Jones Magazine will speak on "Economics: The Coming Dark Ages" in the EMU Tuesday at 8 p.m. Richard Parker, who holds a doctorate in economics from Oxford University, will discuss “the new economic feudalism." A liberal economist, Parker has edited Ramparts as well as Mother Jones. He has published articles in several well-known magazines and newspapers, in cluding the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and the Wa shington Post. His books in clude "The Myth of the Middle Class” and a forthcoming bio graphy of economist and di plomat John Kenneth Galbraith. WEEKEND RENTAL SPECIAL PLUS *200 FREE MILES! The mention of the Mormon Church (“A financial corpora tion...The most patriarchal or ganization I know of," as one local leftist described it) was greeted with even more hisses than that of the evil California cowboy himself. The crowd was cheered, however, by news of a legal suit supposedly soon to be filed against church leaders because of the anti-ERA stand taken by the church. • Last November while cam paigning in Battlecreek, Mich., Reagan left a message that could be pondered in the wake of the televised Ronald Reagan film festival: “A little while ago they were calling out Bonzo. They’d better be careful. Bonzo grew up to be King Kong." • It still remains unclear whether the Reagan adminis tration will be into its second or third week before the word goes forth from this and similar cam puses that conservatism has been tried and failed Now Serving Quiche and Omelette Breakfast 8 am-11 am Monday through Friday 11 am-2 pm Sat. and Sun. /ilso featuring Pub Suppers until 11:00pm seven nights a week.
