sports Gymnasts prepare for ‘best meet on coast’ Photo by Steve Dykes Kelly Crumley will be one of Oregon’s top all-arounders against UCLA Saturday. Eighth-ranked matmen host noontime match Oregon’s wrestling team will try to improve its 10-1 record today as the eighth-ranked Ducks host Central Washington State College at noon in McArthur Court. Oregon has nine wrestlers with winning percentages of 75 or better. Jeff Stuebing (167) leads the Ducks with a 14-1 record. Ryan Kelly (190) and Mike Miller (177) “are both im proved and have made the top part of our lineup real strong,” says coach Ron Finley. The combined record of Oregon’s wrestlers in the top four weight classes is 49-8-2 (Stuebing, 14-1; Miller, 12-4; Kelly, 13-1-1; and heavyweight Dan Cook, 10-2-1). Bruins bring bevy of heavies By DOUG LEVY Of the Emerald Oregon's men's gymnastics team faces its biggest test today at 8 p.m. in McArthur Court when they take on UCLA in what coach Bill Ballester calls “the best meet on the coast this year." Last week’s national rankings placed Oregon third, based on the Ducks’ 274.0 score in the exhibition Japanese all-stars meet. Oregon’s official record stands at 2-0. This will be UCLA’s first dual meet, so they are not yet ranked. Earlier in the week they posted a 279.95 score in an intrasquad meet, a score that would be the highest in the nation if it was official. “UCLA is capable of chal lenging Nebraska for the title, if anyone can,” says Oregon coach Bill Ballester. The Bruins strength lies in a balanced attack which features all-arounders Mitch Gaylord, Peter Vidmar and Carlos Spivey — all members of the U S. Federation Gymnastics team. Two more promising all arounders are sophomore Mark Caso and freshman Tim Daggitt, an international performer in the Junior Olympics. "They have balance in every event," says Ballester. "There are six guys who are capable of getting nines in every event." So the pressure will be on the Oregon all-arounders — Kelly Crumley, Johny Moyal, Raul Tello, Dino Manus and Bob Leverance. For the first time this season, all of Ballester’s gymnasts are healthy, but he cautions, "After you’re injured, for every week you lose, it takes two weeks to get back to where you were, so I think we can still improve a lot more.” Can the Ducks beat UCLA? "Realistically, no. It would be a fluke if we did," Ballester says. “UCLA is the odds-on favorite to win the Pac-10 and be the top team on the West Coast, and we are only the second- or third best team on the coast. "Gymnastics meets are pretty easy to predict. I'm not saying we can’t win, it would just take a great meet for us and a sub-par meet for them.” Although Ballester has main tained Oregon's ultimate goal is to go to nationals, there has to be a lot riding on this meet. A year ago, UCLA was the favorite to take the Pac-10, but the Ducks swept by them in their dual meet on the way to the Pac-10 title and a third-place ranking. The Bruins were second and sixth, respectively. Ballester says "UCLA is in a class by themselves. We are young, and we lost a lot of good people. I would say it will be at least another month before we reach our potential." Swimmers dunk Sacramento With both coaches’ minds on tonight's University of Washing ton meet, the Oregon swimming teams registered easy wins over Cal State-Sacramento Thursday night. The men's score was 78-35 and the women’s 71-42. Men’s coach Rich Schleicher and women’s mentor Virginia Van Rossen used their entire roster to rest their principal per formers for the powerful Wa shington teams. ‘‘We haven’t had everybody at practice because of illness until this week,” Schleicher said. But five of our top six have been ill since school started this term.” One of the healthier ones, George Koch, won the 200 in dividual medley and was on the winning 400 medley relay. Ted Colombo won both diving events. But Schleicher thinks Oregon will fall just short of the Huskies. “It’s going to be touch-touch, and I'm afraid we re going to be the ones touching second." “We pretty much used our secondary people,” Van Ros sen said. “We’re resting the people who will have to come though tomorrow night." The women’s team, in the midst of a five-meets-in-seven days schedule, will give Wa shington “a run for their mon ey,” Van Rosen said. She feels the women’s chances against the Huskies are about as good as the men’s. “If the gods are in good spirits and the good fairy taps us on the shoulder, we might sneak in. “I don’t think we can beat their depth.” Man — one-meter dive Colombo (O) 188.05; 400 MR, Oregon 3:48.4; 1000 free Glass (O) 9:39.2; 200 free Steidley (O) 1 53.14; 50 free Carrington (Sac) 22.16; 200 IM Koch (O) 2:09.03; three-meter dive Colombo 199.30; 200 fly Lagergren (O) 2:03.59; 100 free Carrington (Sac) 48.59; 200 back Mulvaney (0)2:14 46; 500 free Conroy (0)5:06.13; 200 breast Bernett 2:21.93; 400 FR Oregon 3:31.4.
