Wrestlers absorb first loss
Oregon's eighth-ranked
wrestling team suffered its first
defeat of the season to powerful
Cal-State Bakersfield, 20-18,
Wednesday night at Bakers
field.
The Ducks lost the four of the
first five matches of the meet
and were down 20-3 before
Oregon's Jeff Stuebing (167)
took to the mat against Dave
Johnson. The Ducks needed at
least two pins and two decisions
to pull out a win, which would
have been their 11th consecu
tive victory this season.
Oregon won the next four
matches, but only could man
age one pin, that by Dan Cook in
the heavyweight division
“It was really a gallant effort
on our part,” said Oregon

Oregon State College, 56-39,
Wednesday in Ashland.
The Ducks improved their
season record to 3-0.
“Phil had a very good meet,”
said Oregon coach Rich
Schleicher. Oaks, a senior, won
the 50-meter freestyle in 23.08
and swam a leg on the winning
400-meter medley relay team
(3:49.81).
Barnett, a junior, won the
200-meter breast stroke in
2:29.35, along with swimming
on the 400 medley team. Mor
gan, a junior, won the 200-meter
butterfly in 1:58.91, while Glass,
also a junior, won the 100-meter
freestyle in 49.04.
This Saturday, the Ducks
meet Oregon State in a 6 p.m.
dual meet at Leighton Pool.
“They'll definitely be a chal

Beavers, who are rebuilding
their program after it diminished
during the 70s.

“Bakersfield is an outstand
ing team. Tuesday night, they
beat Oklahoma, who was
ranked number two in the
country, 27-12. They can com
pete with every major college
team in the country.”
Oregon’s Mike Erb (118) was
handed his first loss this season,
by Adam Cuestas, a former
Duck wrestler, 9-6. Cliff Porter,
the Ducks' 134-pounder, who
was undefeated on this road
trip, lost to Jesse Reyes, 6-5.
“This loss could really be a
good lesson for us,” Finley said.
“This was one of our better
team efforts this year. Five wins
on this trip is really good for us."
