Reagan picks press aide, huddles with Gen. Haig WASHINGTON (AP) - Pres. elect Ronald Reagan filled two more vacancies on his White House staff Tuesday and spoke with Secretary of State-desig nate Alexander M. Haig about the Iranian hostage stalemate, which may be inherited by the new administration. Reagan stepped out of Blair House, coatless despite Wash ington’s freezing tempera tures, to announce to reporters that James Brady, his transition team spokesman, will be White House press secretary, and Kama Small of the US. Chamber of Commerce will be Brady's deputy. The appointments were the first Reagan has announced personally. The president-elect also pledged to hold regular press conferences, but would not say how often. Reagan's unscheduled ap pearance followed a 1 Vi-hour meeting with Haig, who faces a promised grilling this week when the Senate Foreign Rela tions Committee considers his nomination. Some senators, particularly Democrats, want to question the retired Army gen eral about his White House role during Richard Nixon’s admin istration. After his first meeting with Reagan since the Republican National Convention last sum mer, Haig said he expects his confirmation hearing to be “very thorough.” But he said he is prepared and doesn’t expect any problem. The hearings were mentioned during his session with Reagan, Haig said, but they focused on "the organizational arran gements that we will set up for the conduct of American for eign policy.” Haig also said he and Reagan “discussed a number of current foreign policy issues that are very urgent and very impor tant." Asked if his mentor, former Secretary of State Henry Kis singer, would have a role in the Reagan administration, Haig said he wouldn’t ignore the “experience, skill and know ledge” of any former secretary of state and might seek advice from time to time. Chapman pleas innocent, insanity seen as defense NEW YORK (AP) - Mark Chapman, ringed by armed court officers in a heavily guarded courthouse, pleaded innocent Tuesday to killing former Beatle John Lennon. His lawyer said Chapman won’t deny the shooting but will offer insanity as his defense. Defense attorney Jonathan Marks also said he acknow ledged that his client is mentally competent to stand trial. "Not guilty,” were the only words spoken by the 25-year-old Chapman during a brief appearance before State Supreme Court Justice Herbert Altman. The judge appointed two psy chiatrists and a psychologist to examine the defendant, one of them a veteran of the Son of Sam multiple murder case. Pre trial hearings were scheduled for Feb. 11 and Feb. 25, with a trial date to be set at the latter appearance. Chapman is accused of stepping out of the shadows late on the night of Dec. 8 and gun ning down the 40-year-old Len non as he and his wife, Yoko Ono, were entering their luxury apartment building. Chapman has been described as an ardent Lennon fan and only a few hours before the shooting had obtained the former Beatle’s autograph as Lennon and his wife left the Dakota.
