Oregon sports action over the break: Men’s basketball: The hol iday season began with a bad note for the Ducks as so phomore guard Gary Gatewood sustained a broken writst in the Dec. 20 Athletes in Action game. Mike Clark led the Ducks with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Before Oregon traveled to Portland for the Far West Clas sic, it was announced that starting forward Jerome Wil liams was benched with a bruised shoulder. This left Oregon with a nine-man roster for the Portland tournament. Oregon opened the Classic on Dec. 26 with a 82-78 win over Cal-State Fullerton, with Clark again leading the way with 22 points. Oregon then squeezed by Drake, 75-73, to advance to the finals against then-third ranked Oregon State. The Ducks controlled the tempo against the Beavers, but couldn’t stop the outside shoot ing of guards Ray Blume and Mark Radford, who combined for 38 points and led Oregon State to a 67-57 win. The Ducks finished their pre conference schedule with a 7-2 record. Finally, Saturday night, Oregon dropped its Pacific-10 opener to Arizona, 73-70. Freshman guard Fred Cofield led the Ducks with 20 while for ward John Grieg added 19 points and 15 rebounds. Women’s basketball: Oregon had defending national cham pion Old Dominion pinned to the wall in the finals of the Guisti Tournament, but lost in the final moments, 68-67. Senior forward Bev Smith led the Ducks with 24 points and 17 rebounds. Oregon defeated San Jose State, 81-61, and Oregon State, 72-71, to reach the final game in the tournament. The Ducks then breezed through the Wahine Classic in Honolulu, beating Cal-State Los Angeles, 76-62, in the cham pionship game. In Oregon’s tournament opener, Debbie Adams scored 18 points to pace a 91-51 win over University of Alaska-Anchorage. The Ducks then beat Utah State, 105-72, to advance to the final game. Saturday night, Smith scored 22 points as Oregon blew out Arizona, 94-58, to bring the 15th-ranked Ducks’ season record to 8-4. Wrestling: Oregon defeated Oregon State, 22-16, to win the Oregon Invitational, held the weekend before Christmas. The Ducks also had six individual champions in the eight-team tournament: Mike Erb (118 pounds), Alan Goldman (126), Nelson Imamura (142), Rick O'Shea (158), Jeff Stuebing (167) and Ryan Kelly (190). Oregon then traveled to California to register wins over Humboldt State, 44-0, and UC Davis, 50-0. Oregon wrestlers scored three pins in each meet. Last Sunday, Oregon trounced San Jose State 33-5 to bring the Ducks season record to 8-0. Oregon is now ranked seventh in the nation. women s program takes 10th in national awards Oregon’s women’s athletic program earned tenth place for 1979-80 in the American Women’s Sports Foundation all-sports championship. Winners were determined on a scoring system based on fin ishes in national and regional competition with bonus points awarded for each national com petition in which an institution participated. Oregon scored 52 points in the competition. UCLA was the runaway winner among NCAA Division I schools with 98 points. During the 1979-80 school year, Oregon’s women teams won regional titles in field hock ey, cross country, basketball and track. In national competiton, the Ducks placed second in cross country, seventh in softball, tenth in track and advanced to the second round of the AIAW basketball playoffs.
