And America's seemingly endless love affair with uncontrollable disasters and disaster films has produced “St. Helens,” the motion picture. I, too, grudgingly joined the mania. I bought a dust mask. On my desk at home sits a baby-food jar of volcanic ash, collected from a friend’s yard in Vancouver, Wash. And two of my otherwise apathetic friends have enrolled in volcanology courses. But the public doesn’t have a monopoly on "volcano fever.” Three Seattle journalists are capitalizing on the craze with their new “Volcano” table game And J.D. Stone’s hit song “Harry Truman” is the epitome of timely aggrandizement: Oh, Harry Truman, Your Spirit Lake is gone. But, oh, Harry Truman Your spirit will live on and on. People are captivated by disaster, danger and death. And when it happens, literally, in our own backyard, that attraction is easy to under stand. But as unquenchable as the public thirst for volcanobilia is, “St. Helens” is going too far. The film, says Don Zavin, flack for Michael Murphy Productions, is the pre-May 18 story of Mount St Helens. It focuses on the conflicts between the stubborn and spirited — and perhaps senile — Truman and young U S. Geological Survey geologist David Johnston. Luring the film industry to Oregon is a com mendable idea. Films bring in lots of bucks — “St. Helens” will go seven figures — and reflect well on the region. And it’s an industry where pollution exists in the mind of the beholder, not in the air or water. Frankly, it would be hard to miss with “St. Helens” — a film made in God's country about one of our favorite acts of God. A film on one of the major news events of 1980 was bound to find its way onto celluloid. We can only hope it will be a fair and entertaining recapitulation of history and will not degenerate into a maudlin licking of Truman’s now ash covered boots. Buried with his cats and whiskey kegs, the crusty Truman is entombed somewhere in or under the mountain he so defiantly refused to leave. We can perhaps admire his bravado. But not his intelligence. And certainly not his common sense. The exhaustive efforts of friends and local authorities were lost on the feisty Truman. He’s become a modern-day national metaphor for that inexplicable American homesteader spirit. But it’s folly to confuse a perverse pioneer for a great American hero. “That mountain don’t dare blow up on me,” said Truman, even while the mountain rumbled. That fierce but misdirected independence also led him to disregard the warning signals of undeniable danger. And it cost him his life. The loss easily could have been avoided — too many died nobly in St. Helens’ angry a wakening. It makes no sense to fawn over the foolish dead.
