Soccer team wins one, ties one By JIM VITTI Of *w Emerald Playing in windy, rain-swept conditions twice, the women's soccer team waddled over Evergreen Community College 8-0 in Olympia Saturday, but could only muster enough strength for a 1-1 tie the next day against the University of Washington in Seattle. The University’s record now stands at 4-0-1, while the tie with Washington stabilized the Ducks’ Northwest Collegiate Soccer Conference mark at 2-0-1. Against the Huskies, Victoria Taylor knocked in a 12 yarder on a cross-shot assist from team captain Therese Bottomly. The score came 32 minutes into the second half, giving the Ducks a 1-0 lead. One minute after Oregon went ahead. Washington's right wing evened the count for good on a goal across the mouth of the net. Unfortunately for the Ducks, their big win came one day ear lier against a non-league op ponent, as Evergreen proved to be no match for Oregon. Freshman forward Julie Ray knocked in four goals against Evergreen, three in the first half, to up her season total to six. The Baker defends race title at cross country match While a number of University runners stayed away from Saturday's Willamette Invita tional, Robin Baker used the cross country meet to success fully defend her title, winning the Bush Park, Salem race for the second straight year. Baker, a senior, ran the three-mile course in 16:29, eight seconds off the course record she set while winning last year's race. Baker was followed by teammates Susie Niedermeyer, fourth in 16:46, and Molly Mor ton, 14th in 17:21. Netters grab 2nd place at Vike tourney Portland State continued its dominance of Northwest women’s volleyball by defeating Oregon 15-12, 15i3 in the finals of the Portland State Invitational last weekend. The Ducks were impressive in the two-day tournament, win ning four of five preliminary matches before the final against the Vikings. Oregon beat Whitworth College, 15-13, 15-7; Oregon State, 4-15,17-15,15-8; Eastern Washington College, 10-15, 15-8, 15-5; and the University of Montana, 15-11, 15-10. The Ducks’ only loss was to the Washington alumni, 15-10, 15-9. Oregon’s Cathy Hill was named to the all-tournament team. The Ducks, now 21-11-1, will continue competition next weekend at the regional championship at Washington State. But the absence of top Duck runners was felt in the race for the team title, as Oregon State University totaled 53 points, while the University was second with 67. Linfield College followed with 99 points and the Oregon Track Club nabbed fourth with 147 points. "Robin’s training is coming along well," said Duck coach Tom Heinonen. “She’s almost as fit as she was last year at this time when sh beat our entire team (while competing for OTC). Heinonen also praised Neidermeyer’s running for be ing more agressive than its been so far this season, as well as "top five runner" caliber. Bottomly also knocked one in before the buzzer. The Ducks, leading 5-0 at in termission, opened the final period on a scoring drive by Ray, which was followed by goals by Traci Osterman and Sharon Revfem. Osterman’s goal was the freshman mid fielder’s first of the year, while Revfem, a senior forward, upped her record to two goals. “Territorially, we had the advantage about 75 per cent of the game,” said coach John Feeney, whose team took 36 shots on goal to Evergreen’s two. Ironically, the Huskies' goal was only the second scored against the Ducks this season. In the University’s opener, The University of Portland also scored once, but Oregon has shut out its other three oppon ents. So far this season, the Ducks have outscored their op ponents 23-2. Oregon now has the week off before hitting the highway again this weekend. Saturday the University will challenge Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash., in a league contest.
